And of course, they can't drop the suit now, or they essentially admit guilt to her countersuit, and show the world what fuckwits they are.

Then again, I'm not a lawyer.

Someone needs to bait the RIAA into a trap. Get them knee-deep, then keep doing it to them until they're drowning in bad press, and their lawyers just turn tail and run. They won't learn the first, second, third, or even the fourth time, so once you find a sting that works... you can keep running it. The idea is that you have to find something that you can say BOOM! LOOK! There's where they committed digital trespass, or violated terrorism acts, whatever... get them on CRIMINAL grounds and the second it happens... you've got papers already written and ready to go. They wake up with cops in the building and Federal agents issuing subpoenas.

Then... YOU DO IT AGAIN. Once they've got charges upon charges piled up.

You JUST KEEP DOING IT. Hell, get brazen and tempt them. After a while, everybody's going to notice that they keep falling for it... the courts will realize that their arguments have no weight.

Next, you get more money than you can imagine and start lobbying. Make it so that there are actual criminal charges that have to be brought against file-sharers. This insures trial by jury. By now, the American people will be so sick of the RIAA that they'll constantly let file-swappers off the hook.

Set up "witness protection" style schemes where people that have been targeted can get moved away to neutral nations that have no laws that the RIAA can use, and no extradition treaty. Why? That way if people are so scared by the assholes, they can go to a place that the RIAA can't touch them.

Finally... start bringing criminal and civil charges against RIAA officials, employees... anybody on their payroll. Hound the people that make it work. Make it known that they're getting hounded because they're affiliated with the RIAA.

Final nail in the coffin... buy TV ads, billboards, et cetera, that claim that the RIAA is tied to "anti-American" groups, or to hate groups, or both. Then... fabricate evidence that proves it. By this late stage in the game, nobody will question it. You won't need anything to happen because people will be so against them that they won't care if the claims are true. They'll make it true in their own minds.

And now... you've won.

The whole time, you've been running a website where musicians can come and buy hosting to sell their music directly.

If they're still around, levy anti-competition charges against them under the Taft-Hartley Anti-Trust act.

Fuck the RIAA.
Go the fuck ~

Got an even better idea than that.

You and your band practice, practice, practice.  Find a good talker and make him go out and find local gigs for you, at bars, youth centers, clubs, etc.  Once you have a little money saved up, make a record.  If you take a look at this page:
http://www.cuerecording.com/boing.htm
You will see that recording a CD in a pro environment is less than $1000.  Once it has been mastered, burn a whole bunch of copies at home, or find a cheap duping service.  If it turns out to be popular, go have some cases printed and cds stamped - see ad at bottom of page showing that you can get 1000 complete packages for $1700.  Sell them at your shows, sell them online:
http://www.artists-first.net/index.php
Congratulations - your music is now popular enough to get you laid occasionally, and your music has gotten out to plenty of people.  You might even have enough money to make another album at an even better studio. #*#

For those of you who don't play, consider making short-term loans to these bands.  Anybody who has had a year of college can write up a simple contract that when they make some money, the band pays you back first.  Additionally, a clause about paying back with interest if the band doesn't do well, or whatever.  Personally, I loaned a band the money to make a 7" record.  It was an enjoyable experience, and I may do it again.

Why this will fuck the RIAA - because the RIAA is about big business, and the maintenance of certain profit margins.  It has absolutely nothing to do with artists, fans, music, or even cds - it has to do with sales.  And they are in power because we keep them in power, with the radio system, the Mtv system, the cd store system, and etc.  Everyone who has ever been to a live show at a small club knows that there are thousands of bands out there 10x better than anything on your radio.  It's about time that we start deciding what we like and what deserves our money, instead of letting somebody else decide for us.

Q: "But Worker201, how am I going to make 20 million dollars, rape the shit out of dumb groupie whores, and get addicted to cocaine without the support of a giant record company?"

A: What the fuck did you get into music for?  I've seen girls take their shirts off for hapless local pogues just because they tuned a guitar behind the stage - there's no shortage of sex, once you play a few gigs.  So the legendary stories of Motley Crue, Kiss, and Def Leppard are totally within your grasp, and you don't even have to go on a national tour.  However, if you do want to go on a national tour, that's just as easy as booking a gig in a local bar.
As for drugs and money issues, well, that's your fucking problem.  Usually, the fame caused by multi-million dollar payoffs causes you to take drugs.  Besides, the key to destroying the multi-billion dollar business of the RIAA is to remove the big money from the business.

Q: "But what if we do this and the RIAA gets some super-talent supergroup together that totally rocks and sells $3 cds?"

A: Tough break, we are left with a supergroup that totally rocks - how terrible!  And $3 cds?  That's terrible too!  Listen, hotrod, the RIAA can put out shitty records and charge ridiculous prices because we let them.  They're basically a cartel, fixing prices, and unmotivated to produce quality products.  A little competition, and things will change quickly.  If that means better music at better prices, then the movement has succeeded.

A cd costs 17 cents to make ... this is fact ... they sell blank ones to you for more, unless you have a contract with the manufacturer ... either way the CDs are not the major monetary issue ... mostly its producing the album and then selling it that will cost the most money.

Unfortunately, neither plan will work ... in my opinion, of course. hm_murdock's plan requires a significant amount of time, money, and lawyers (and of course more money to feed the lawyers) ... unless you are at least 1/10 as rich as Bill Gates this will fail. As for worker201's plan ... it might work, again with money, time, practice ... really none of that counts ... it's who you know that counts, tell me Britney Spears was #1 on the "charts" because of her 'talent' and years of practice (at lipsynching), or maybe it's just because most guys think she's a hot slut who can't sing worth a fuck ... but heck fuck her anyway. Yeah, I know what you're gonna say, what about the good bands with real talent ... well even if you are good, you'll just get hooked on drugs and sluts and all that good stuff and die young like every good band ... that's the best possible outcome. (I think most of this can be inferred from worker201's well put argument)

What you're describing is the inevitable outcome of pouring so much money into the music industry.  What I advocate is severely reducing the flow of money to the music industry.  Less money for bands, less cost for fans.  It's about the music, isn't it?  Too many people want to be celebrities - well, that's where the drugs and hookers come into play.

what about this: drugs and hookers for all musicians and then the recording industry would completely implode after only a few weeks. Then, come the revolution, the socialist free music party can sift through the wreckage and instigate an iron hearted music system designed to always benefit the struggling individual.

how's that for a plan B?

Film it all for reality tv - I'd like to see what kind of hookers would flock to various artists, like Michael Jackson or Keith Richards.

keith richards would get old and blind hookers while michael jackson would only get odd alien weird freaky hookers of no specific gender.
but perhaps they could just content themselves with the drugs part of my plan?

I think Keith Richards has already taken all the drugs.  And if he hasn't, he should get a fucking refund, because he looks like he has.

I don't beleive this ----.
A woman who has never used a computer? It cannot be! It must be a myth! An urban legend!

It could be worse.

Microsoft could be making music.

"Brittney Spears NT Service Pack 4" now for sale at only 299.99, but preinstalled on every non-iPod MP3 player!
Long Live the Revolution!
