DRM coming to Hard Drives
« on: 16 February 2006, 21:43 »
http://www.tgdaily.com/2006/02/15/trusted_computing_extended_to_hard_drives/

Quote from: Tomshardware
San Jose (CA) - As part of a series of announcements made this week at the annual RSA security conference, the Trusted Computing Group announced it will be publishing a specification that extends the reach of devices covered by the so-called Trusted Platform to the realm of the hard disk drive.  With the advent of TCG's Storage Work Group's implementation of the Trusted Platform Module version 1.2, comes at least the technical possibility that a fixed, single industry standard could emerge for digital rights management at the storage device level.

This is going WAY over board IMHO.

Discuss.

Wait a minute ... so this is saying that in the near future all harddrives will have DRMs built into them as a part of the firmware ? ... Looks like I'll have to start looking to buy my last computer ... the last free HDD at least ... maybe I'll buy all the free HDDs now and sell em later for millions each ... :) ... assuming the government starts forbidding the use of free HDDs. Like prohibition ...

Maybe soon, they'll come out with DRM pencils and DRM paper.  Assholes.

I agree.

On another note

DRM pens could actually be possible. A computer chip placed inside the pen, and sesnors track how the roller-ball is moving and if it sees you writing down copytighted stuff it could lock the ball from moving...

Heh, I knew that spending $1.99 on a bamboo ink pen would pay off someday.  Now I just have to find a recipe for ink.

I like fountain pens more than ballpoints ... there's more friction, making it easier to write nicely ... for me at least

You mean less friction, don't you?  I like fountain pens too.  They glide.

When i think about all the RIAA, MS and other shit on this planet i end up thinking one thing: The end is near, and there might be a war too

E-War I?

I think this is one of those plans that will collapse on itself (just like several of y projects, actually)

People are going to get so pissed off at this. Some people actually OWN the music they play (like me) and will get supremely pissed at having something try to keep the legal copyrighted stuff off.

Besides, how will it work? Hook up to the 'net and download a database of every copyrighted thing? Since it will have to store some data on the "illegal" files, someone will find a crack to actually have that software download all the "illegal files". And for those who can, just unplug the modem and use the machine for playing games, and get into the printing industry.

However, if it goes through, I will personally torch every electronics store within 5 miles that sels the shit.
Long Live the Revolution!

It's not the end ... but that's what they want you to think. Really it's just the beginning of a new era ... a shitty one as usual

Unless you're willing to stand up and shout and fight and make a difference - then it could be a nice and snuggly era.

Computers are going backwards. Play movies in higher quality, then get sued for playing movies in high quality. Copy movies to a hdd, then get sued for piracy. Open Source is going to be illigal soon (i wouldnt doubt it) because it hurts M$'s earnings by like a billion a year, which is really not much compared to what the slags make (:D  had to say that).
Windows XP Service Pack 2. Because we couldn't be arsed the first time.

Windows 98 Second Edition. Look, now you don't need that bloody CD to install new hardware.

Windows Vista. Even your computer knows you have a small penis.

Windows Blackcomb. We are planning the OS after Vista, which is allready a year late.

Windows ME, the Marmite Operating System.

XP Mobile. Take your errors with you.

64-bit computing and SSE2/3 are more to be feared. If new copyright material is produced in high quality encrypted 64-bit only with a copyprotect flag (no IDE redirect) enforced on the mobo by firmware, then you might not even be able to play it on 32-bit computers, much less crack and copy it.

Pirates will have to have nice camcorders to film what they want to pass around.
