SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Two busy Web sites that focus on Apple Computer Inc.'s Mac OS X operating system went silent Friday just days after they featured links to information on how to hack the software and run it on non-Apple PCs.

The OSx86 Project Web site stated Apple had served it with a notice on Thursday citing violations of the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and the site was reviewing all of its discussion forum postings as a result.

Using the DMCA to squash websites that talk about putting OSX on non-Apple PC's.... very very dissapointing.

I don't know... I can see both sides on this. The issue is that the OSX86 guys at this point are doing things that require OBVIOUSLY PIRATED SOFTWARE. There's not yet a retail boxed version of OS X for Intel, so, that means that the only versions they could be running would be pirate.

That's the issue that Apple is having.

If the sites were obviously pirating sites, then I suppose Apple was right ... but if they weren't, then they were wrong. Obviously the one site that was spared doesn't damage Apple's reputation, but the other one might ... if it wasn't a pirating site.

Wheter or not people posting to the sites were running a "pirate" version of OSX is irrelevant.    

The key question here is: were the sites distributing "pirate" software, or were they talking about how to run OSX on non-apple hardware and maybe contributing original code and patches and kludges to do it.  

If it was the first case (and I don't think it was) then the takedown is valid.  If it's the second case, it would be like MS using the DMCA to keep sites from discussing ways to put Linux on the XBOX (which even MS didn't have the stones to do).

I suppose it's impossible to "build your own mac" now that you'll need to get by the TPM-check-crap. Even though the hardware is just as easy to get, it won't run OS X unless you buy off Apple.
