Linux on my school's computers
(1/1)
H_TeXMeX_H:
I found out today that most computers at my college at least dual-boot Linux and XP ... and sometimes triple-boot (is this possible ? ... it might be) Linux, 2k, and XP. The question is why keep Window$ around ? I mean ok ... maybe most people can't admin a Linux system ... but in this case they don't have to ... the crack (as in they smoke crack) ITS staff can admin the system. Ubuntu is not that hard to learn.
Pathos:
I read an article a while back about a guy who had over one hundred operating systems on a single machine.
There would be teachers who only know windows that would complain if it wasn't available.

They probably run programs that are only avaialble for Windows.
Aloone_Jonez:
Maybe certain pieces of hardware attached to them only have Windows drivers.

Actually most of the peripherals I see are quite compatible with Linux ... mostly HP and Xerox printers ... and projectors that don't need drivers.

Possible ... but the only programs on them are M$ Office :( (OpenOffice works much better), Adobe Reader (available for Linux), IE :fu: , and Winzip (come on :().
There are a few specialized programs like Sci-Finder ... but it's only installed on a small group of computers, nobody uses it, and it may be easy to wine.

Maybe ... but I know more teachers that complain about how much M$ sucks ass than teachers that would complain if they didn't have their daily dose of BS ... I mean M$
You know ... now that I think of it ... maybe I will order some Ubuntu CDs and hand them out.
