MS Acquisitions

Check this out.

I was actually surprised, I thought there'd be more by-outs.
Windows [n.]
A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.

IIRC, that was a decision made by Paul Allen to diversify Microsoft's portfolio.
Sinister? Yes.

Most of those investments they did in the 90's do not affect 2006.
For example, they invested in UGC Europe (aka UPC). I'm using Internet and digital television off UPC.
They use Solaris for their servers, and they use Thompson's JAVA based digital cable decoders (instead of Microsoft's ones).
