Window$ theme madness
« on: 2 May 2006, 01:25 »
I've been recently searching for Linux themes (mostly for fluxbox as well as some icon themes) and I've come across so many themes that are specifically designed to resemble Window$, especially default Window$ XP. Now I think to myself ... who the fuck likes the default Window$ XP theme, much less being reminded of the torture brough on by Window$ ? I can say that if there was a rating opiton on the site I made sure to vote the theme down several times before I left.

Here are a few examples:

http://themes.freshmeat.net/search/?q=xp§ion=projects&Go.x=0&Go.y=0

http://art.gnome.org/search.php?search_text=xp&x=0&y=0&search_type=all

http://www.kde-look.org/content/search.php?search=xp&name=xp&sort=3

These two take the prize ... I hope the fuckers get their asses sued for this bullshit:

http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=1499

http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=33654

On a side note: Why do some linux distros insist on a Window$-like login sound ? Do they want Linux to be Window$ or vice versa ? Personally I don't think it helps their image to copy their greatest competitor. It makes me think that less people should be switching to Linux and instead staying with the Window$ they love so much. I will NOT attempt to enlighten any Window$ lovers (tell them about Linux or help them switch)... I don't want them turning Linux into Window$ ... hell no !!!

(am I over-reacting ? I don't think so)

Exactly. If a popular Linux distribution where to copy the Windows GUI, they'd have the follow up on everything Microsoft does with the GUI.

Take xpde for example, they are doing work copying the Vista interface, while they could be improving KDE, Gnome or XFCE instead.

Wow ... well I just don't think it's right. They're turning Linux into Window$. I personally find GNOME and even KDE far more intuitive and easier to use than the Window$ desktop. I mean come on it took me 1-2 weeks to learn GNOME ... probably an extra week for KDE if I cared enough ... I say we should start a campaign to keep Linux free of Window$ bullshit ... no more copying Window$, if you're going to change your OS it has to be new, better, and different. If it weren't different it would be Window$ !!!

This may make me sound mean, but I think Bill should sue all Linux distros or desktop environments that are copycats of Window$ ... seriously.

gnome on ubuntu is so intuitive I didn't need to learn anything.

KDE took a bit longer.. mostly working out where all the display preference settings are. but the control center is a piece of cake.

windows has so many settings hidden all over the place its unbearable.

I completely agree ... it is NOT user friendly at all.

So why then do they do it ? Why did they make an entire destop environment that mimics Window$ for Linux ? Why are there so many Win XP themes for Linux out there ? Are there actually people out there who are stuck with the Window$ desktop format ... they don't have enough brain power to step out of it ? Or is it something else ... ?

I attempted to try one of those XP themes on my BSD box at work today. What a frikken disaster. I unzipped the theme and look at the install.txt. It said to run three scripts to install the various parts of the theme.

So I open up a shell and run them...."Command not found".

WTF?

So I open up the script in a text editor and right at the top is

#!/bin/bash

HUH? bash is not a stadard UNIX shell. Pretty much every UNIX besides linux does not come with bash installed by default. Even more annoying was the fact that there were no commands in the script that required bash. The author could have used the standard /bin/sh and been compatible with 100% of unix-like systems in the world. So, I replaced the bin/bash with /bin/sh in every script and then ran them, but the theme didn;t show up in KDE. I navgated to the directoroties that the scripts had copied the files too and the files has been put IN THE WRONG %$%$## PLACE.

I deleted all of the files and gave up.

Ubuntu, intuitive?

Don't make me fucking laugh, DOS is more intuitive than Ubuntu. :rolleyes:

We, seen Windows themes on Linux but is it possible to do it the other way round, are there Linux themes for Windows?

Can you make XP look like Redhat's Bluecurve?

Who would want to ?

@ toadlife: that's what you get for trying to install that shit. It also shows how fucked in the head the theme makers are ... besides them even thinking of making a Window$ theme for Linux.

while (1)
   bsod ();
