AACS-DMCA-DRM The Troika
« on: 29 April 2006, 22:14 »
Thank Intel, Microsoft, Sony, Disney, Panasonic, Toshiba AND Warner Brothers for this shit... they're the founders so it MUST be a good thing right?

AWWWW! Look! The AACS has a cute lil website, complete with pictures of multicultural families and distracting images of pleasantness on the "homepage." Nobody will be smiling in that van once that 800 dollar handheld bluRay player stops working destroying itself because it thought 'Billy' was trying to pirate when he stuck an old SegaCD in the unit.

I love how they call it "legitimate content" when they say that it will accelerate our access to it. They never point out or come out directly that this new standard is ONLY to lock out unwanted use by the consumer of the content that THEY bought.

Furthermore the DMCA already makes it illegal to use such non-free encryption with Free Software though it's alright for these same companies to use GNU/Linux or BSD based firmware on current generation DVD players that use CSS protocols or to PLAY CSS DVDs and BluRay discs on their next-generation gaming platforms that are based on GNU/Linux.

Hell I wouldn't be surprised if the machines that press these HD-DVDs and BD discs ran on Free Software.

You have the LAW- DMCA, the HARDWARE- DRM and soon to be the STANDARDS FORMAT- AACS... the TROIKA of corporate greed, hypocrasy and the enslavement of our rights.:thumbdwn:

Sorry I get passionate about this stuff and sometimes go into a hurricane fit :)

And no DRMs do A LOT more than that... the technology that BluRay will use will take advantage of various Digital "Restrictions" Managements but according to Wikipedia "(DRM) is the umbrella term referring to any of several technologies used to enforce pre-defined policies controlling access to software, music, movies, or other digital data and hardware. In more technical terms, DRM handles the description, layering, analysis, valuation, trading and monitoring of the rights held over a digital work. In the widest possible sense, the term refers to any such management."
