Linux is actually very HW compatible ... for example my Creative soundcard just burned (the fucking piece of shit !!!) and I went out and bough a decent but cheap one. I was doubting it would work straight off with Linux, but it did ! Maybe I was just lucky ? So far Linux has succesfully detected any hardware I've thrown at it. (Note that the "not recognizing my laptop's HDD" bit was due to the 2.4 kernel being loaded by Debian based systems by default ... the 2.6 kernels support it just fine)

So what did the bios thing do?  Did it have something to do with the caches?

perhaps... I will have to check the version documentation. Don't see how ubuntu worked fine,

Linux can detect some weird things, I have this really old pcmcia external cdrom, worked fine first time with Damn Small Linux.

I thought windows demanded the master drive?

Win98SE doesn't care. Why the hell does everyone think they need XP for games when 98 works just as well?

Depends on what kind of "tweaking" you mean.

a poem by my computer, Macintosh Vigilante
Macintosh amends a damned around the requested typewriter. Macintosh urges a scarce design. Macintosh postulates an autobiography. Macintosh tolls the solo variant. Why does a winter audience delay macintosh? The maker tosses macintosh. Beneath female suffers a double scum. How will a rat cube the heavier cricket? Macintosh calls a method. Can macintosh nest opposite the headache? Macintosh ties the wrong fairy. When can macintosh stem the land gang? Female aborts underneath macintosh. Inside macintosh waffles female. Next to macintosh worries a well.
