plus there is Yast to install progs that will tell if there will be any conflicts or needed dependicies before hand

well, i would say i have never had any real problems with apt in that respect (certainly the minor niggles that build up over time don't seem any worse than similar in yast)

did you have a swap partition on your harddrive at the time?
usually livecd's use them if they exist. It would be piss slow but it'd work.

nope. Had only winxp on NTFS (it's my wifes machine). Mines been boxed up until I clear the box room so I can have room for mine again.
