you tube files, iSquint
« on: 25 June 2006, 05:16 »
After several hours I finally found a way in OS X to save and convert you tube videos.

To save us Mac users much time, here it is. Go to this url and paste the you tube url from the top of the page you are trying to watch

http://zfreez.com/web/Ut.htm They will give you a url to paste to your browser.

Download the .flv file from that link.

Go to iSquint at http://www.isquint.org/ and download it.

Start iSquint , drop and drag the .flv file and in the iSquint folder will appear an mp4, by default, which will play properly in VLC or QT.

Apparently the you tube videos have changing frame rates just to f*ck with non-authorized players. iSquints' log will show what it had to do to fix it.

Sorry I've been away for a couple of days.

You tube videos are playable by an embedded flash player in your browser. They are not intended to be downloaded. The true url is obscured. Google allows d/l's now, they used to have the same arrangement.

On a pc running Windows, there are browser extensions in Firefox that make it very easy to d/l the video, but those don't work in the mac version, for some reason.

The d/l'ed file does not have the proper extension. The link I mentioned above runs a script that renames the file to a .flv, which is what it is. VLC can play flv files sometimes.

I tried to play a motorcycle helmet cam video in VLCand it started out fine and quickly crashed VLC. The motorcyle crashed, too  . The car in the left lane skidded to avoid running into a car in front of it and slid sideways.

iSquint fixed it (the video, not the bike) somehow, and very quickly and for free. The video had rapidly changing frame rates, that seemed to fool VLC.

There is a standalone flash player for Panther, but I hate flash in general and would like to have my videos in as few formats as possible, so I can still view them 10 years from now.

I tried the website + iSquint and it works perfectly.  The videos appear to be of higher quality than what YouTube shows you right on the site, too.  Yay!

Too bad I'm running out of hard drive space. :(

surely there must be more than that ... ok then get rid of movies and uncompressed audio files ... I realised today that I still had a Matrix Revolutions rip (I ripped it myself) on my HDD ... took up a shitload of space ... delete it
