Swiftfox?
« on: 5 August 2006, 10:28 »
It's supposed to be faster but I'm not sure. It seems a bit faster. Is it really? Anyone tried it? If not and you want to http://www.getswiftfox.com/

Doesn't thins really belong in applications?

I haven't tried it but is there really any need for yet another browser?

I suppose more choice is always good but aren't we spoilt for choice anyway?

It's nice ... I like it, thanks :)

Hmmm ... the CFLAGS they used for pentium 4 might be useful for compiling other things.

Really it looks like they just provide Firefox compiled with different optimization flags ... other than that and Swiftfox instead of Firefox, they are the same.

Example Pentium 4 CFLAGS they used:
Code: [Select]

-Wall -W -Wno-unused -Wpointer-arith -Wcast-align -Wno-long-long -pedantic -O3 -march=pentium4 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer -msse2 -mmmx -mfpmath=sse -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2 -pthread -pipe

the useful part I was alluding to earlier is:
Code: [Select]

-O3 -march=pentium4 -fomit-frame-pointer -msse2 -mmmx -mfpmath=sse -pthread

If that's all they're doing is building branches, that's pretty fucking pathetic.  I would think they could be doing something better for the community, if they have the bandwidth to serve firefox downloads.

Of course I'm not doing anything for the community either - but I haven't made up a name and distributed something either.  What I'm saying is, if you're going to get in the game, get in the game.  Their news blog features stories about 24-hour pharmacies and Pepto-Bismol.  Not exactly revolutionaries, these chaps.

It's just optimized builds of firefox, don't think it's supposed to be revolutionary...

And btw Refalm there are many more, way-more important benifits alot of Gentoo users get from compiling their own software.

Kinda have to weigh the benefits ... do you want faster programs, or programs that install faster (technically you can get both benefits with Arch if you have an i686 processor and lots of patience)

Well sometimes it's necessary to compile from source - if you wanna apply a patch or make changes or get some experimental functionality.

Arch is all i686? nice, must try it

Yeah, I wanted to try it too, except looking at the documentation kinda discourages me ... there's so much I gotta do right to get it set up ... so many chances for error ... pain
