This is totally different from everything they've done before, AFAIK.

They should have been doing this all along, though.

Of course, there's not much of a chance of them actually DOING much of this. This is probably just to hide the fact that they're PURE SADISTIC EVIL TYRANTS, but hey, what do I know.

I agree.

What's going on in their brains?
"Hmm... we are suddenly going to stop what we've been doing our entire corporate life and play nice, a strategy which we have used to make shitloads of money, so much money that we can violate laws and pay off fines as simple business expenses."

Talk is cheap.

The 12 principles are based on three main areas: choice for computer manufacturers and customers, opportunities for developers, and interoperability for users, Smith said.

a poem by my computer, Macintosh Vigilante
Macintosh amends a damned around the requested typewriter. Macintosh urges a scarce design. Macintosh postulates an autobiography. Macintosh tolls the solo variant. Why does a winter audience delay macintosh? The maker tosses macintosh. Beneath female suffers a double scum. How will a rat cube the heavier cricket? Macintosh calls a method. Can macintosh nest opposite the headache? Macintosh ties the wrong fairy. When can macintosh stem the land gang? Female aborts underneath macintosh. Inside macintosh waffles female. Next to macintosh worries a well.

I agree, MS are always saying stuff everyone wants to hear and do the exact opposite.
This is not a Windows help forum, however please do feel free to sign up and agree or disagree with our views on Microsoft.

The convenient thing about coming up with their own rules is that they are the only ones who can decide how well they are following them.  I bet there will be press releases or "articles" coming out now and then about how Microsoft really is following these guidelines, but they will be followed only as far as their PR advantage outweighs their financial disadvantage.
