I finally upgraded to Firefox 1.5.0.4

I waited for a while to move up from 1.0.4 because it takes a while for the extensions and addons to catch up.

With adblock, downthemall, flashblock, and flashgot extensions installed, get the extension called Unplug from here  https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2254/

After installing it and restarting Firefox, go to Tools>Extensions and highlight Unplug by clicking it once. Then click preferences at the bottom of the extension window.

A window called CompuNach Unplug will open four tabs. On the Programs page, check everything and show Unplug where the Windows, Real and VLC player executables are on your mac, if you have them.

Under Display check Display Unplug in the right click menu, and Open Results Page in either a new window or new tab.

On the Searching tab check everything except the two 'Always' buttons for KeepVid and Videodownloader and click Okay at the bottom and restart Firefox to load those preferences.

Now when you go to watch a video, since they are Flash, the video window will have the Flashblock button on it. In a blank area of the video window, control-click and choose Unplug from the menu. This will open a new window or tab and the true download url will be highlighted to simply click and save to disk. The default video name is Get_Video. Rename it with a .flv ending and send it to iSquint for conversion if needed.

This method should work, regardless of OS.

Firefox extensions usually aren't OS specific.

The only extension I know of that doesn't work on a powerPC Mac is the ActiveX replacement since x86 code won't run on a ppc.

iSquint is for Mac only, though.

If the flv file won't play in VLC or MPlayer then you'll have to get the Flash Player for Windows. If you're using Linux, you may be out of luck playing some .flv files. The ones that caused VLC trouble seem to be wrapped in a container that allows starting and replaying. iSquint fixed those.

My technique consists of going to Google and tracking down the actual first video (which works about 90% of the time).  For that other 10%, I have buddies with Macs.

Firefox has a linux extention that alllows you to download the target movie file anyway.Videodownloader 1.0

Well actually 1.5.x.x does crash way more often ... I've never had 1.0 .x.x crash. Has 1.5.x.x ever crashed for you ? It crashes like once a month tops, but I got Session Manager extension, so it really doesn't hurt much ... you can just restore all windows

1.5 never crashed much for me. Do you have any of the problematic extensions, or can you reproduce the crashes? It could be a plugin's fault either, see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Category:Plugins

Bon Echo (will become FF 2.0) has a crash recovery thing that restores all windows and tabs when it crashes btw.
