Windows vs Linux

With a little time and some object research this is what I have gleaned as some basic differences between windows xp and linux.
   What I think that the term user friendly is mistook for idiot proof. It doesn't require much thought on learning how to use windows xp. However, with the lack of thought comes the lack of control. Windows is a control freak of a system. Which doesn't make that much difference to the average user, but when you gain more knowledge you discover some nasty things about windows. Mostly the lack of privacy..it's a freak'n giant spyware program. Hiding a persons url's and cookies. Hiding inside a word document personal info for the "right" sources to view at leisure. Upon the first update when given the option to except stuff from them (and here we think it is for that session only,ha ha) they take a liberty of leaving a backdoor open for whatever reason, and that's not the remote assistance. A person can get programs to by pass some of this, to a limited degree.
  Now what makes Linux superior is that it is not full of spyware. Also the main advantage is choice, you can modify things to your taste. The control that someone has on their system seems to be unlimited. Thereby not idiot proof.   But for the average user it requires more thought on using and it can be screwed up very easy if you don't know what your doing. So Linux being "better" than windows (I think) is a perspective but Linux being "superior" to windows (I think) is a fact.

converting is easy. I rarely boot into windows at home anymore. Of course, i use a mac. And my redhat box gets plenty of use.

Funny thing happened the other day at my father's home. He's used Windows for many years and set up hardware and all in there alot. Funny thing was he just bought a notebook with Windows XP. He had no clue how to even find the applet to set up hardware.  Sure was not under "Printers and Other Hardware". Actually, he had spent many hours before I came over there as the Toshiba has an internal 802.11 but Windows does not detect that with its Hardware Wizard which maybe should be called "Hardware Hack" instead. And I thought Hardware detection was one of the main reasons for going to PCI!

This, i feel is a one of my big issues with windows.  Believe it or not Linux has better hardware support.  you don't have to go hunting for special drivers only to finnaly find it, install it then keep getting BSOD'ed.  Whereas linux not only supports older hardware but also the latest upto date hardware as well.

Linux made my life a hell of a lot easier!

Dont ditch windows right away. Keep it. If you are a total new comer, there will be many times when you will feel fed up with Linux, simply because Linux and Windows are VERY different.
 When you feel you had enough go back to windows to do your work untill you figure out how to do the same thing in Linux. Baby steps. Go with an easy to use Distro. If you cant use it you wont be able to learn it. Go with Suse. Very noob friendly and very well put together.

  Thats what I did. It took me several months to get 100% windows free. Now all my computers run Linux (Knoppix-RH-SUSE).

  Nice conclusion by the way.
You wont see in Linux applications being tied to the kernel like you will see in windows bringing total havoc to your system when something goes wrong. Example. Try to trouble shoot Windows when Explorer has shit on it self. You cant do NOTHING since windows is mostly GUI driven.

  You wont have to worry about viruses

  You wont have to deal with the registry if you want to change something that MS doesnt want you to change. I dare anyone in here to tell me that the reigstry makes sense.


 Dont expect to be able to play all of your games though. If you are a heavy gamer you might wanna keep windows for your gaming needs. Soon enough game companies will start port their games for linux as well....but for now your choices will be limited when it comes to big titles.
