Interesting... a *beta version* of a *Microsoft* product.  I wouldn't dare touch it.

They say this one will be focused mostly on security.  As an example, the Windows Messenger Service will be turned off by default.  Might I say, that it should've been off by default in the first place?

xyle_one:
Isn't the messenger service used by windows admins to talk to the users or something. Isnt it used for real reasons? I thought it was, and accepted the fact that it was enabled by default. Maybe instead of disabling it, they should rewrite it? You know. Make it so it cannot be abused. Then disable it.

Yes; however, I have yet to hear about anyone using it for that purpose.

Too bad the system isnt "modular". The you could just get rid of it all together.

Windows 9x/ME had WinPopup. You could choose to receive network traffic only. There's no way you can do that with Messenger, so you're basically stuck with spam messages on your desktop.

Oh well, there's always Groupware based solutions, like PHProject and Novell Groupwise (now has a Linux and Mac client too   ).
