IRC is the best...damnit
Microsoft is not the answer.
Microsoft is the question.
"No" is the answer!
The nice thing about Windows is - It does not just crash, it displays a dialog box and lets you press 'OK' first.

It's incredible to me the number of people who have been noting alternative multi-protocol apps, who have failed to note that Gaim has long since been ported to run on Windows.  Looks like MSN loses another round.

of all the multi-protocol apps listed in this thread, I noticed no mention of kopete.  Am I the only one that uses it?

I used it, but Mercury Messenger and Gaim are a better option for me.

I don't like gaim because you have to leave the client running in the task bar in order to be online, at least the last version I used you did.  I'm sensitive about the appearance of my desktop to a freakish level (no more than 3 rows of icon, programs in the task bar getting to cluttered etc), so me and gaim just didn't get along.

I agree, it's annoying for me to since my monitor is limited to 800x600  :(

Why don't you buy a new monitors are fairly cheap these days, you can even get second hand ones with a 1024x768 resolution.

that's hardly a fix.

windows users hate gaim because it requires you to install a gtk library as well, unless you get the bundled version, which they don't have the intelligence to figure out. also, if they want to install the window port of gimp, notice it requires a different set of gtk libraries? really stupid in my opinion, but anyway... plus the windows binary of gaim is often a version or two behind the latest binary for linux (but fuck 'em, they use windows, right?) kopete's fine, and i have been known to use it, it does sit nicely in your K taskbar, if you have one, i like windowmaker and xfce so i don't, and prefer gaim for that reason.
