I still call myself left!
« on: 10 August 2008, 02:12 »
My mother drives a porsche and my daddy drives a merc.
My wallets full of money coz I've never had to work
I know of every rort and every lurk and every perk
But I still call myself left

Refrain
My parents social class is ruling
I've had the best of private schooling
I don't know who I think I'm fooling
But I still call myself left.

I'm in the student union 'cause it adds to my CV,
I don't like VSU because I hate democracy,
I harvest marijuana and I chain myself to trees,
But I still call myself left.

Refrain

For many years I've studied at the university
But I'm still no fucking closer to getting my degree
That's okay because my daddy owns BHP
But I still call myself left.

Glory Glory Liberal Students
Glory Glory Liberal Students
Glory Glory Liberal Students
Coz VSU is law/in

Also:

I'm Maxine from Mosman, you can call me working class,
I sip chardonnay from latte mugs, not ordinary glass,
Impartial public programming's a giant fucking farce,
But I still call myself left.

Hi my name is Kevin and I'm married to Therese,
She put her staff on workchoices and now they work for free,
It's shit like this that makes me richest man in the ALP,
But I still call myself left.

I don't know your accent, but in my country, class, glass, and farce don't rhyme.

That's a strange accent then you must have. I've been imagining these three words in every American accent possible and I just don't get it. You are American right? I must be wrong.

Can you record yourself doing this poem?

I won't be making any recordings, sorry.  But I can tell you that the a in farce is pronounced similarly to the a in car.  If you said the word far, and made a hissing sound afterwards, that's what it sounds like in America.

FWIW, that is a sort of rhyme - the consonance of the hissing s sound qualifies it - but it's not the perfect rhyme that the other stanzas have.

The Australians like the southern parts of the UK often make the 'R' sound instead of the 'A' sound in certain words, say arse instead of ass!

I'll try to spell them so you Americans will pronounce them the same as Austrailians and southern Brits.

Class = cl-ARSE
Glass = gl-ARSE

Kintaro,
The yanks always make the A sound when they pronounce these words, say ass instead of arse!

gl-ASS
cl-ASS

But they still sound the R sound in farce so it doesn't rhyme with cl-ASS or gl-ASS.

Either way it pretty much still rhymes.

Ah, that would do it.

Is there a special way of pronouncing Therese so that it rhymes better with free?  I imagine:

Therese = Ter-eece or Ter-eese, whichever makes a hissing sound
free = free, with the long E
