All Things Microsoft > Microsoft as a Company
Developers jump ship to DX10.
Kintaro:
--- Quote ---"After over a year of delays, the OpenGL ARB (part of the Khronos industry group) today released the long-awaited spec for OpenGL 3.0 as part of the SIGGRAPH 2008 proceedings. Unfortunately it turns out not to be the major rewrite that was promised to developers. The developer community is generally furious, with many game developers intending to jump ship to DX10. Is this the end of cross-platform 3d on the cutting edge?"

worker201:
Wow, they still have SIGGRAPH? I thought that died out 20 years ago. Is it still a real force to be reckoned with, or is it just an also-ran, struggling to stay relevant in a world dominated by the MacWorld Expo and CES?
Refalm:
Playstation 3 is still on OpenGL 1.2, and still producing great graphics.
But this isn't good news for new consoles that will come in 5 years.
I'm wondering why Sony and Nintendo aren't more involved in OpenGL. I don't think it's a good idea for them to be knocking on Microsoft's door for good graphics.
Aloone_Jonez:
Going to a competitor for something doesn't sound like a smart business move.
Refalm:
These are into the OpenGL working group:
* Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)
* Apple
* Creative Labs
* Graphic Remedy
* id Software
* Intel Corporation
* NVIDIA
* Sony Computer Entertainment
* Sun Microsystems
* Texas Instruments
Let OpenGL rot in their CAD asskissing. Why won't they start a new one, possible open source?
