It's surprising they haven't been doing this before.
It's already done in water treatment plants down on eath anyway.

Yes, that is true. I'm sure they have thought about it, but shuttle crews are not usually all that big, and the mission aren't all that long. They're doing this on the ISS with more people and for longer periods of time.
