Finally got into the IBM help documentation.  It says that the fast-blinking orange battery light indicates a charge of less than 5%.  If the light does not change within 24 hours, replace the battery.  I guess that seals it.

Not really.  Like I mentioned, it works just fine plugged into AC power.  And funds have been a little tight lately - Seattle is an expensive place to live.  The truth is that I've never actually used this machine on battery power before, and I don't have many plans to start today.  Maybe my mom will buy me a battery for Christmas.

Contact the manufacturer, even if its out of warranty. Sometimes they will still replace at no charge it if you mail your old one in.

(I know this is possible with HP and Apple)
