And yes, you can be fired for anything at any time.  In certain professions, anyway.  Doctors, lawyers, and teachers, for example, have been organized into professional organizations for over 100 years, and it's actually pretty hard to fire them.  Union workers can't be fired on a whim either.  Government employees can be fired, but it's really hard, because the govt has a responsibility to keep people working.  But low-level people working for a corporation?  Yeah, Ballmer could theoretically fire one for not being excited about the name of the new search engine.

The part about Balmer shouting Bing sounds believable but the employee being fired for not does not, may be it was joked about but taken seriously.

It's funny how Microsoft is artificially is trying to make Bing a buzzword, while Google doesn't like its brand name to be used as a verb (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_%28verb%29).

Let's compare:
"I Googled my girlfriend yesterday." "Yeah, I did that too. Just out of curiosity of course." "Of course."

"I Binged my girlfriend yesterday." "Dude really, we're not in high school anymore... what you do with her is your own business."

I cannot imagine the marketing meeting that led to adult professionals with degrees in business and/or computer science agreeing that Bing is a good name for anything.

name aside, the search engine's shit compared with Google, and many other search engines.

Just go and try it for a few search terms and compare your other favourite search engines.

Yeah, I tried bing and was not very satisfied. As far as I know, Microsoft has reskinned the same search engine 3 times now? I'm quite sure it was originally MSN Search, then Live Search, and now Bing, without any real change in the algorithm.

There's a commercial by Microsoft, that wants to make you believe that typing "Xbox 360" on Bing equals greater search results, compared to other search engines.

I know. On my computer with AdSense disabled due to Adblock Plus on Firefox, I get 178 million results on Google and 71.1 million results on Bing.

Microsoft is pushing Bing to lots of clueless, stupid dumbass people.

While I'm not a Bing user, I fell compelled to point out that number of hits is not the best metric for measuring search engine utility.  You have to consider relevance as well.  One great result is always better than 20 million useless results.

I completely agree. Whenever I search for weird errors in vague connections between server operating systems I sometimes build for school, most results are bullshit. No matter what engine.

1. Forum posts that says "never mind, I solved it. you can close the topic now, and for the love of God I will never reveal what the solution was".
2. Keyword collector websites, that link to each other.
3. Old newsgroup posts that had some relevance in the 90's.
4. Click here to read the solution. Now only for $10.

as time goes on, the internet's content will of course become ever less relevant to real life on balance. I suppose search engines will need to adapt to find ways round this.

By the way, am i the only one that thinks Bing is one of the worst search engine names i've ever heard?

It brings to mind Chandler Bing from Friends and almost at the same time Bing Crosby. (closely followed by Bing Lee, an Australian electrical retailer)

Every time I hear the name, I think of Chandler.  Microsoft might consider that a success, but I don't.
