Kerio Personal Firewall can do the above mentioned about ZoneAlarm and uses MUCH less resources in the process...

...And, I most heartily agree with getting rid of IE for security reasons(and switching to Opera). However, getting rid of IE has two added, bonus benefits:
1) Less Windows crashes
2) Increased performance

I actually use 98lite Pro (which also works for Windows ME and 2000-XPlite is in the works) to get rid of alot of other unneeded Windows bloatware(mostly all of Windows). My Win'98 system VERY rarely crashes now and performs great on my 1Ghz Celeron, 384Mb RAM system(with various tweaks and enhancements added).

my linux box with mozilla, and hundreds of other free programs crashes much much less than my copy of windows ever did, including when i had only just got it.

also, thanks for linking to that other firewall, i know there are better ones for windows than zonealarm but i just never got around to finding out what they are since i never expect to need to connect to the internet using windows again!

Hilary, you want to know what all those program running in the background are.  Are they spyware?  I assume you know how to use MSCONFIG but do not know what you can safely remove.  Here are two web sites which have the answer and can tell you what all those applications in your start up really do:
http://www.greatis.com/regrun3atyouroption.htm
http://www.pcisys.net/~ravnos2/techinfo/MSConfig.htm

Hope this helps.  If so, I am after my first star....

well, how do those websites know? maybe they want you to delete important stuff?

who can you trust?

anybody who would ask a windows question at fuckmicrosoft.com would probably be well advised to think seriously about accepting advice from any source, which might end up in their system being trashed. You know that websites that tell you to delete stuff and change system settings won;t accept any blame when you take the steps described and end up with a fucked system.

Just a thought... there a lot of screwed up people out there...
