Win 98
« on: 3 July 2002, 03:00 »
I wanted to set up one of my other boxes with a dual boot Win98/SuSe, as a multimedia machine wired to my tv and hifi installation.
Man, what a fucking piece of shit OS is Win98????
I didn't remember that it was that wothless!
I did the full install on a clean drive, installed the ton of drivers (rebooted a dozen times) and then when I finally wanna start to install the codecs and divx players I use I have to reboot one more time .... and I get a shitload of VXD files missing????
Should I try a Linux only installation?
I'm somewhat affraid I won't be able to access that pc from my network (I was planning a Pc Anywhere install to be able to start whatever movie or mp3 from my main pc).
I know there is Samba but I didn't fiddle with it yet, is it relatively easy to set up or am I gonna have a hard time lettin Winblows pc's communicate with Linux boxes?

for samba, it depends, do you want the windows computers to access files on the linux box, or do you want to acess files on the windows machine fomr the linux box

I'd like both to be possible.
If I do a Linux only install I'd have to be able to acces the Linux files from a Linux/Windows machine.
But if I dual boot I'd have to be able to cross-access the files from one OS to another, Linux-Linux/Linux-Windows/Windows-Linux.
Don't know if that's easily do-able though.

If it's possible, you should really get Windows 2000. It's the only MS OS that Linux users preffer out of all of MS's OS's. It's a shit load more stable the 98, it no longer has System Resources, does away with VDX files for the most part, and works like a real OS.

If you are stuck with 98, how many drivers did you install? Last time I installed 98, it installed 7 drivers, and rebooted twice. I would reinstall 98 again, and this time be very gentle with 98. Only install 1 thing at a time, tread lightly, reboot, then install the next thing.

Seriously, get 2K.

I do have Win2K/SuSe on my main pc.
The reason I wanted to put 98 on hte other box is that 98 is much more flexible than 2K when it comes to watching divx movies and handling multimedia.

Hmm... most 2K users got their multimedia working fine under 2K. What happens in 2K what you need/works better in 98?

If you wanted 2K stability and 98 multimedia, and had a hard helmet ready, you could TRY (and in, give it a shot, and then decide) Windows XP.

However, if you can get it done in Linux, use that.

xp is not something you can exactly try

you can't just download a ms os for free.... remember?

(tho i have dl'd 2k off gnucleus)

you can get 98 to work... it seems to fuss less if you take out everything but the video card when you do the actual install, and let the computer cool down every time you reboot

with as many mistakes it is amazing that windows even works
