Windows, not by choice.
« on: 25 November 2002, 05:59 »
My first visit to this site was a good one! I cant believe there is so many people like me out there that has similar feelings. I have since setup a "fuckmail" address and I love it !

I have read several posts about gaming and many people saying to go buy "Playstation" or other type of "TV" came console if games are not available to play on a Windows based PC.

My Primary reason to own a PC is to play games and to see the awesome HIGH RESOLUTION FULL SCREEN GRAPHICS that will never be seen on a TV game console(Well until everybody has 3 HDTV's in the house).I like to follow the video graphics technology that everybody has access to and not to spend too much money for a specialized system (SGI).

I have installed Mandrake Linux 9.0 on my machine and am currently learning how to use it .I have a long way to go still and am enjoying it as I go. Yes I am a Windows user and since XP has arrived, I hate it !! I dont like the activation scheme as well as the direction Microsoft is going       I have 95/98/982nd/ME and XP.

I have paid for all of these CD's retail and enough is enough. But how will I use cool software written for windows on a non windows PC ?? What is the best OS for gaming??

[Edit: Just broke up your thing into small paragraphs, that way its much easier to read  ;) ]

The best OS for gaming is Linux.  Unfortunately most of the games are witten for the herd OS, AKA Windoze.  But, almost all Windoze games can be played in Linux using either a free program called Wine (which likely stands for Windows emulator dispite not being a true emulator), and WineX, which costs money (but there is also a free version).  I noticed in your post that you have XP.  Have you gotten rid of it yet?  If you must use windows, at least don't use XP, win2K is a bit better anyways.  Of course getting rid of windows alltogether is ideal.

The majority of consoles these days (hell, all of the big 3) have devices that can display on computer monitors. You'll be amazed how much your missing out one. It might be a tad smaller then a TV, but I was one who always preferred quality over quanity.

For me Linux is a great gaming OS and I play Warcraft III all the time on it, without one crash ever.  Even the Doom 3 alpha ran on it under wine but surprise, it wouldn't work under XP on my brother's computer even though it was the Windows version!  How's that for irony?

Im just curious, do you use WineX? Ive heard great things including that you can play Max Payne under linux. Also did you buy a distro that came with WineX, or did you buy it from transgaming?

Yeah, I use Winex with RHL 8, and yes I bought it from them; it didn't come with the OS, being non-free software and all (red hat linux 8 is very strict about containing purely free software which is why you won't find flash players, mp3 support, etc. installed by default)
