well! your only real alternative, on an x86 PC is Linux, which is free. (or some other UNIX clone, which will have less support than linux, and may not be free)
Having just installed Linux for the first time myself though, i will have to warn you that linux will be temperamental if you have any odd hardware (usually only really new kit is odd, or laptop type stuff). Also it will take a while to get the basics (not any longer than learning windows would though). If you want to edit M$ style files, you will need to download and install extra programs. Example, if you want to use M$ Office files, you need to get OpenOffice which is also free. (what about all this free stuff, eh? M$ would make you pay through the nose for all this!)
You will need to download a copy of a linux distribution and burn it to a CD, or pay for a professional style boxed copy from a software selling shop, or there are a few websites which offer the service where they will burn you a copy of whatever distribution of linux you want and post it to you, for a few

No need to buy a second computer, just buy a second harddrive and a swapable drive bay and 2 shuttles.  Then you can switch back and forth between the two operating systems....much cheaper than getting a new comp and it saves you the trouble of "dual-booting" on one hard drive.....good luck.

True, that would be one solution if you had the doshola, but dual booting is not a big hassle.
If you are going to use Linux, you will come up against things that are a lot more confusing than dual booting.
