well! your only real alternative, on an x86 PC is Linux, which is free. (or some other UNIX clone, which will have less support than linux, and may not be free)
Having just installed Linux for the first time myself though, i will have to warn you that linux will be temperamental if you have any odd hardware (usually only really new kit is odd, or laptop type stuff). Also it will take a while to get the basics (not any longer than learning windows would though). If you want to edit M$ style files, you will need to download and install extra programs. Example, if you want to use M$ Office files, you need to get
OpenOffice which is also free. (what about all this free stuff, eh? M$ would make you pay through the nose for all this!)
