IE-MICROFT EXPLORER (Virus Problems)???
« on: 17 September 2002, 23:54 »
Hello
I have spent some money with Macafee for Spamkiller, On-Line Virus, Firewall. I don't know what is happening...
O/S Win98SE first- While connecting to the with IE 5.0, the minute the modem start to dial, I get a lot of pop-up windows for sex, search engines, traffic4u banners, and everything else you can think of. If I connect to the internet, I can't download anything , these banners knock me out completely. If I clear them, they re-generate, and again this starts again, and again.

Even with the firewall. I have done on-line virus scans, but to know avail. I even installed windows 2K. Not only did I have to get new drivers, but it got worse.
I really need help. I am trying not to do a complete Format, and install. Much too much info on my drive. I do have backups, but not on all of my program files. Any help Needed.

You will only have those problems with Microsoft operating systems. If you want to stick with a Microsoft operating system (Windows) you might want to head over to http://www.windowsbbs.com/ and ask your question there.

If you are interested in switching away from Microsoft operating systems and applications then stick around here and there are plenty of people to help.
Someone please remove this account. Thanks...

You have spyware that has inadvertently been downloaded to your computer. There are several freeware and shareware programs that remove spywayre from your machine. You could re-install if you want or delete your entire regestrie  :D  (the better choice).

Dump windows, Get Linux, you'll be glad you did. It will feel like a rusty machetee being removed from your ass once your wipe your hardrive clean of that vile OS.

the solution is stop using IE, and stop using windows. if you use windows, you can be partially forgiven for thinking you have been forced into it, if you use IE, then sorry, you deserve everything you get.

It may well be worth downloading Ad-aware, as I think you've picked up some spyware on your travels...Good luck!!

You have malicious code, Ad-aware will not necessarily pick up on this one. You've picked up some malicious code which IE 5.0 is really VENERABLE to. It's on a lot of slightly dodgy websites (you know the ones, not overtly illegal (although closer inspection leads you to get out very fast), and offering seemingly loads of sex site content and not having those sign up screens).

You will NOT get rid of this with on-line checkers, security updates, etc. It's code sitting on your system, which probably gets executed everytime you start IE.

You have two options. Format and reinstall or try a different browser. Mozilla.org, opera.com, Netscape (and there are others), remeber to configure your preferences after install, it makes a difference.

Remove the IE executable after you have your new browser so no one else can start up and see the same offensive material. Then find something else to do with your life rather than surf sex sites. Like using your computer, because it's a powerful tool. And then find out about Linux and Unix and Macs.

Looks like spyware to me! The best solution to your problem is Linux, undoubtedly  :D  .However, if you're forced to use Windows at least get a decent browser like Opera, Mozilla etc  ;)

Well, if you don't want to reformat, you could try finding a small hard drive (~5-10GB) and installing an OS on that one. I recommend linux (duh) and using wine to run some of your windows programs. But if you don't want to switch over from the dark side, just install 98 or 2K on the small hard drive and make it master.

This has never happened to me... I used IE, lacked a firewall, and lacked an up to date virus scanner for the longest time. It may not be your fault, but it would seem that you might of given some things permission to download(for example, a program a site advertises that you have to download to set up your "Free" porn account) and do this to your system. Nowadays I strictly use Mozilla. I have been able to surf for pr0n without getting forced cookies, mass pop-ups, re-directions, uncloseable windows etc. Thanx MES!

Folks
I am feeling a bit better. The Regclean, and ad-aware did not remove the files that were corrupted. I installed Mozilla, and when I started using this everything seemed much better. I am sure the files are still in there, but at least its not driving me insane.
I have some other problems that I have to address yet, but this one is temporarily solved.
