A true case example of why windows sucks
« on: 12 January 2004, 03:47 »
This happened to me a couple of years ago with an old computer I built out a couple of computers in the dump.  Nothing in this computer ever quite worked right, but one day I get this windows 95 blue screen of death, which essentially says that windows has detected an evil 16 bit driver which must be eradicated and stomped out of existance.

Windows then proceeds to delete my CD-ROM driver.

Now, the real problem, is that The only way in which to install a new cdrom driver, is from the windows 95 cdrom.

Now, my question is: what concievable rational explanation is there for windows to do this?

by the way, my cdrom driver was a 32 bit driver which had managed to coexist with windows relatively peacefully for about six months before this happened.

Your argument is nullified because you used scrap parts like that.

PEECEES ARE SO GOODE BECOS U CAN MAK THEME OUT OF TEH PARTES NOT LIKE TEH MACKINTOSSH THAT U HAF TO BYE FROM TEH STOR!!!!111LOLOOLOLOLOLOL

Cobble stuff together and you're gonna have shitty problems.

Don't use 16-bit drivers for stuff.

Windows 95 will kick your ass. It and NT 4 ruled all. 2000 is damn good too.

XP is very good as well, although nobody here will agree with me.

Give me Mac OS X instead though. IT MAKES THEM ALL LOOK BAD

The driver for your cdrom is on the cd? isn't that like the manual telling you to download modem drivers? What idiot put drivers on the medium they provide support for . . .

nobody. because nobody provides drivers anymore! they say "USE GENERIC WINDOWS DRIVER"

but... WINDOWS DON'T DO THAT.

a friend of mine has a Lite On CD burner that WILL NOT WORK anymore with XP, because she

1) Installed "EZ CD Creator", a damnably shitty app... then

2) uninstalled it properly. She and Windows both did their parts... but part of the uninstall was for it to REMOVE YOUR CD BURNER DRIVERS!

Well, no actual drivers exist for her model of CD burner. What's worse, is that EZ CD Creator actually removed the entire drivers.cab file! XP Wants to get it back off the CD... but, well... you know!

And the end of the story...

After about a month of trying I just gave up with the realization that windows had gone far down enough to delete the base dos drivers (which I had installed ages ago as a backup), that fact, combined with the fact that my floppy drive had a catastrophic internal failure that resulted in me removing the disk that was in it at the time with a vacuum led to my decision to get rid of the computer and actually buy a new one.

This story is provided for entertainment value and philisophical discussion.

By the way, I have had a modem manual tell me to download the drivers before.

Oh BTW...you could've used a 16-bit DOS CDROM driver temporarily, in order to get the 32-bit one.

For one.  Always copy cabs to HDD, then install from there.  That gets rid of the CD crap.  2nd, there are a billion cd drivers on floppy's from the internet.  You should always have one of these stashed away.

Microsoft is shitty, but common sense tells you to be logical.

www.bootdisk.com

Get a bootdisk with cd-rom support, boot it and then boot windows by running that win.com file, or just copy the cabs to a folder.

Because it's Windows we're talking about. As for why, no body knows! Not even His Gatesness knows.  ;)
