Uh, not so fast... They haven't been saying that for 10+ years, Linus just wrote the kernel 10 years ago. Maybe about 6 or 8 years ago they started saying that. I was an early adopter and I was already puting it out on development group workstation desktops 8 years ago. I was in the *extreme* minority. Now look at how fast it's become popular as a server OS? Do you seriously think Novell, Sun, IBM, and Microsoft thought that were possible 6 or 8 years ago?
Remember, just 3 years ago Linux was not nearly as popular as it is as a server OS. I don't think it's too far of a stretch to think it could be as popular on the desktop in 3 years, as long as there are no political or monopolistic roadblocks (Palladium/TCPA/DMCA/etc).
