gAIM, IRC and file transfer

Using Mandrake 9.2 and gAIM. I log onto an IRC thing and when I try to get files, it always fails. The other user says he gets this message:

(notice) Send has failed on try 1 of 6. Type /ctcp [indy]**removed** NoReSend to cancel any further attempts. Attempting to ReSend... - SysReset 2.53

What can I do? Do I need to open ports in drakFirewall?
