quote:
The OpenCD is a collection of high-quality Open Source Software. All of the programs on the disc run under Windows; the disc is intended to be an Open Source showcase. New users can try out Open Source software in the comfort of their own, familiar operating system, rather than having to take the drastic step of reformatting their hard drive to install Linux.

Currently, the disc is aimed solidly at non-techies. The primary audience is expected to consist mostly of people who use computers regularly for their work, but are not power users. This might be, for example, Jane from Accounting, who spends a lot of time working on spreadsheets and checking her email. She can find her way around the computer without too much trouble, but wouldn't know a kernel from a TCP/IP stack. By showing the benefits of Open Source Software to users such as these, we hope to encourage its adoption -- in the workplace, in schools, and by individuals.

The OpenCD features a CD browser application that allows for easy browsing of the programs on the CD. It also includes a selection of essays about Open Source philosophy, and links to other programs that might be of interest.

(if somebody wants to bitch about me quoting the site here, don't bother, just pretend you did it and i told you i didn't give a fuck)

what do we think of this halfway house type plan?

THAT QUOTEING MAKES ME ANGRY LIKE THE MOST FURIOUS RUSSIAN BORN PERSON WHO LIVED IN EASTERN EUROPE FOR A WHILE AND NOW LIVES IN TEXAS (joke).

Sounds like a sweet idea... except what they said about Linux. But its a reasonable idea, my friends and family ask me to burn them copys of Office, and thats what they get (OpenOffice) and then when they bitch i read somthing stallman wrote and be geeky. Actually i do it a lot. And my dad likes using Red-Hat 8.0 (He just likes the Virtual Desktops thing) and the fact its better.

But doing that with Open Source is great, they will be Linux ready then.

aimed at non-techies and it has WinVNC?  anyway;

I think the idea is great.  What they need is more "mainstream" software tho; I didn't recognize but four of the titles.

I had a link once that showed how to run a different GUI shell on a windows box -- most of them were derivitaves of BlackIce or Enlightenment.  I think it would be better to port an entire KDE (or Gnome) install to windows; get em used to the graphical interface.  If they don't like it they can switch back to crayola-crack; and if they do like it (as well as things like OO.org, Mozilla, Evolution) then they can switch to linux underneath and eliminate the BSOD's / Magical Reboots.  Anyone want to undertake the project? lol.

I did that for school and burned 15 CDs just out of good wil and gave them to the other students.
From compilers to openoffce and bla bla bla. All were apps for windows.
Trust me, if people are stupid, they will be stupid no matter is you take them by the hand.

Well i have shown 2 friends Linux that use it now, 3 Mozilla and 2 OpenOffice, they all use it. And they made copys for people they know...  and so on!

"Moilla is fast"

"Why do Microsoft bother with Internet Explorer"

"Better then my pirate Office XP Pro"

"Gnome is sweet"

"Microsoft can take there heads out of there asses"

"FUCK YOU BILL GATES"

(The last one was me).

Show your friends the light today!

One of my mates who uses Linux is a total no-lifer, and he thinks the internet is a global network for porn, and uses Red-Hat 8.0 with no-problems. He also has 2 80gb hard disks both full of porn, he just brought a 300gb with his welfare and is happy. Sadly this person never does anything, but he sells lots of porn, lots and lots... and even more.
