what is up with this? When I click it..it opens a blank white screen with a little arrow on the right, and when I click it..I get some unreadable words in about 400 point font! any clue on how to make open office.org writer work right?

Microsoft is not the answer.
Microsoft is the question.
"No" is the answer!
The nice thing about Windows is - It does not just crash, it displays a dialog box and lets you press 'OK' first.

Of course he has it. How else would he be clicking on things?
Also, I would first like to ask something: did you try installing AA fonts? If so, you may have screwed up. I suggest playing around with Tools -> Options -> OpenOffice.org -> Font Replacement, thought I may be misreading your post.
