Possible Bribes

I emailed a full account of this to the webmaster of fuckmicrosoft. The webmaster may post it on the site. This is just a thought by the way. In brief:

Microsoft may have been bribing companies like Adobe, Newtek and Discreet not to release for linux. Everyone knows how well these apps would run under linux, after all Shrek was completed under it and Lord of the Rings had considerable help from Linux. However, any windows user can easily install linux on their computers, so releasing for linux would be a serious threat to microsoft.
So MS may have paid them. They cannot easily or cost-effectively switch to Macs though, so releasing for Macs is not much of a problem. Besides, using macs is less cost-effective.
Software like Mozilla, Wordperfect and Opera were not paid, as they were going to be crushed by microsoft anyway, so they released for linux.

This certainly sounds paranoid and/or stupid, but with a company with over $1B profit, it's at least a bit likely.....

If any developers are reading this, why not open up to linux?

of course this is all old news. in more extreame cases m$ outright bought thier competitors and closed down operations. M$ assimilation tactics are unscrupulous, if they cannot quiet thier competitors they will aquire them just to have control. M$ controls Intel, Compaq, and until recently Aol and Dell. Aol started going with Netscape and in retaliation Aol is no longer included with Windows XP, big surprize. also dell creatively fucked M$ by releasing machines with FreeDOs on it so people can install linux to get around the M$ "systems MUST ship with an OS" clause.

How does "Buying out" work? Can't they just say "fuk u, go suck it MS!" when MS offers to directly buy out a company?

Adobe?

This is news to me.  Unless I am mistaken, Adobe software is native to Macs....and I doubt that Adobe would be so easily swayed by M$.  Perhaps I'm wrong, though....

But also, I think they also know that they have serious ...free... competition in the Linux world as well.  Whats the use of porting Photoshop to Linux if noone will buy it and end up with GIMP and the like...
Using a Microsoft product and hating every moment of it is the first step to liberation.

"buying out" works something like this:
Billy, down the street, invents the toaster.  This invention can do all sorts of wonderfull things, including toast bread.  M$ realizes that it has no toasting capabilities, so it goes to billy and says "we'll buy your technology for [whatever]."  Billy, thinking (rightly so) that he has a real bread-making idea (pun intended) says "no way, jose."  M$ acquires a copy of the toaster, reverse engineers it, and makes its own version.  It then adds the toaster to the design of all new houses built under its subsidiary subcontractors, as well as any house that goes thru remodling or redecorating.  This M$AcitveToaster dosn't toast bread nearly as well, shorts out half the time (requiring a power-cycle or complete re-instalation), and catches on fire every once in a while.  But it's free, so the homeowner doesn't bother buying a new one.  Besides, due to advertising, the only toaster that the homeowner is likely to know is M$ActiveToaster.... Billy looses enough market share to require filing chapter 13.  repeat for sally who invents the tv, jeffrey who invents the washer and dryer, and shawn who invents the fridge.  now they come to your door because you invented the telephone..... now you have two choices.... sell out and (maybe) get enough money to enter a new line of work or retire, or go bankrupt yourself......

netscape had to sell out to survive -- but they sold out to AOL to spite M$.  good for them.  I think the price was $3 mil. maybe 5.

microsoft may or may not be caught up in the (us) government anti-corruption proceedings, but the important thing to remember from all of his is that they ARE dirty, as we all have known since 3.1
