Microsoft sets up a stand at Linux World

Hahaha, I never thought they'd try something so silly. They better keep a close eye on their personal refreshments at the Microsoft booth, or they may find them tasting "off".

They did it last year too. I don't believe they should be allowed if they don't have any Linux products to showcase. But that's just me. I saw someone mention that they should charge enough rent on the Microsoft booth to pay for the entire LinuxWorld.

i disagree.  being an advocate of choice, i believe that people should be allowed to choose to hang themselves with the windowz os if they really want to.  however; linux users should do thier part in ensuring that the information they put out is accurate -- for example, showing a fully quantified document about how linux is cheaper than windows, and challenging the M$ reps to come up with actual numbers to support thier contrary claim.  every notice that the studies funded by ms that show that windows is ceaper never give details about prices?

No big news there. They did it again last year, like void wrote. As for being or not being allowed there, I really can't say. All I can say is that I always enjoy it when M$ recognize  Linux's popularity and potential.

The thing is, it is LinuxWorld, not Comdex. The only thing Microsoft has ever done when it comes to Linux is try to kill it. And that's exactly why they attend, an attempt to try and pull people away from Linux.

I find it disgraceful and unacceptable that mS, who are always intent on destroying their competition are attending LinuxWorld, such an prominent and influencial Linux event.  I think the organisers should deny their requests, but they obviously like the smell of mS's dirty money (they got it illegally), on behalf of the interests of the Linux community and the development of Linux.  We should really stand up against this insult and threat (mS will kill us, if they get any chance), though its probably too late for that.  Even looking at TheReg's article, the title is, "MS bids to intercept Unix defectors at LinuxWorld", they are just trying to promote their own products, in which case they have no place at this Linux-specific expo.  Plus there's the matter of, what mS describe as (described as - last year) "initiating dialogue with the Linux community".

Right, let's explain my theory.  The Linux community is the one thing that has ensured its success, and will allow further success in the future.  So, what do mS do?  Destroying - or more specifically, corrupting - the development of Linux would be seriously hindered.  

Another attempt at the corruption of the Linux community (void man, you know what I'm talking about here   ) - and in turn Linux is - influencing the sites they visit.  Take for example, Linux.com - in fact all of the so-called "OSDN" (owned by the hypocritcal VA Software), plastered all over their sites are mS ads - "trial offer, no risk at all"(except for microsoft lock-in and boycott of all competing products) visual basic, "better for microsoft's today - worse for Linux's tommorrow - get microsoft behind your business" - you've seen these, haven't you?  I've also seen some of their articles with support for mS (or their opinions), like the Advisory Alerts (making it look like the open source method of development is ineffective - about 50 alerts on each of their weekly "reports" (many of which aren't security-related at all)).

I kind of see it as mS trying to get Linux to embrace and extend itself, if you can understand that.

Bottom line:  mS attending LinuxWorld: It's not acceptable.

lol, I think that we have absolutely nothing to fear from Microsoft attending the LinuxWorld Expo. Linux will keep growing no matter what they try to do. Besides, the money they paid for their booth will certainly help. I heard last year linux people did play some pranks on them that were rather funny.

well, most people would be businessmen, so starting a riot probably wouldn't be easy, and wouldn't look good for people out side the community. then agian, whoever started it, would get $5 from me for a court fund.....

and yeah, osdn is starting to get kinda owned. does anybody have how much space does all the projects take up?  maybe storing it all off to a remote multi terabyte array would be a good idea. before the source gets taken down.

Ironic, isn't it?  One would have to wonder why Linux and open source projects have to rely on the osdn to house their projects, or use their "services" (so called "collaborative development enhancing", what shit?  All of the best Linux and open source (Linux kernel, XFree86, KDE..) projects have some focussed people with ideas and good programming skills.  The open source development model usually takes care of itself).  The Linux and open source community can host and organise their projects using nothing but their computers with their own free technology; the Linux (or BSD) kernel (and GNU tools) and the Apache web server.  I do think it is very dangerous to place all the sources at the OSDN, a hypocritical and money-hungry corporate who would think nothing of going down and taking all the sources with it   .  So, how about we start to organise a project which will link up multiple servers which can be used to store sources?

and preferablly not in the U.S. so when somebody says they have copyright on this or that, or somebody trys to pull a vague DMCA cease and decist, they get told off.
