Having just broken my plain two button scroll wheel microshat mouse from getting angry with windoze 98 i put in my usb optical intellimouse explorer. its confy and okay, but the software sucks. the intellipoint driver crut version 5.0 soposably checks for updates every minute! slowing the computer down. and the intellimouse explorer version i have(older one with two big buttons on the side for browsing the web, new version has two very small buttons) well, every single one of those mice had a big problem with the cord. it shorts out making the mouse useless. you need to take about 3 inches off the connection to the mouse and totally re-do it. now it works fine. but when i go to scroll, about 1 in 10 times, it jumps to the end of the page when its sopposed to go only 3 lines at a time. tsk tsk.

Yeah, well that's why MS is primarily a software company and not hardware.  And we know how good their software is

Get a Logitech or something.

yes, that new sideways scroll mouse is cool. at the comp. store, the microsoft mouse was more confy than the logitech. well, neways, when i get my linux mandrake on mybox, i will use the mouse. the mouse is pretty, good, just the driver software stinks. on the mandrake linux site, my intellimouse explorer is compatible. yay. next time you get a mouse, and if its microshat, plan to use it on linux mandrake or someting. just dont get a microsoft mouse to use with windoze!!! ;

Two buttons on the side? WTF? I'm probably a bit out of date here... but what do those buttons do???

I have gone thru too many mice. I don't purchase lazer mice because I just know after a few months the buttons will start to go. I got 6 mice for $3 each and so far I have gone thru 4. Its so annoying.

I would NEVER purchase MS hardware. Not a router, not a mouse, not a PC (or any of those WinPCs or WinModems) simply because it is from MS. Bad enough they have an OS monopoly, they shouldn't be allowed to get into hardware.

I use the intelli mouse explorer 3.0...It's nice, and works well on my suse box, even though I haven't found a driver that will activate my side buttons.

In windows the side buttons are nice because you can set them to do things like the forward and back button. It's very handy when you do a lot of reading and have to reference back to another document. If you use a tabbed browser you can set it to open, close or switch tabs as well. But like I said, in my linux box, the side buttons are just an additional spring supply for when the other two buttons wear out.
