No Sound in RH 8
« on: 20 February 2003, 12:51 »
Hey,

I have no sound in RH 8.

Speakers are pluged in, and the sound works in Windows.

I have recently in new drivers for my vid card, if that has a connection of some type let me know.

Help Needed.
Thanx

Warning: possible informative post

RH8 has to be really stupid when it comes to sound and randomly deletes the files /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp0. In a console type

cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp0
push ctrl-z after a couple of seconds
if static came out of your speakers it works

if not try
cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp
push ctrl-z after a couple of seconds
if static came out of your speakers it works

If that doesn't work just say and I will try to help

/end possible informative information section  :D
//this is how I was born :)

cat /dev/urandom > /dev/mybrain

Tip for win98 (l)users: type copy /con/con in your command prompt to increase stability

i am in the same boat. red hat fails to properly use my C-Media soundcard. some sounds play, some other sounds wait till some other apps exit, then play, some sounds don't play at all. the C-Media card is supported by alsa, which red hat does not include.

Any help (of a non totally confusing nature) on how to install alsa properly in red hat please?
the alsa site has really confusing (to me) instructions.

thanks....

PS yes, i did cat /dev/urandom to the /dev/dsp device and it worked. not only that but my konsole console beep works too.

i just tried using xmms, the esound plugin works, the arts plugin works, the OSS plugin works, and having installed a few rpms of alsa using apt-get for red hat i tried the alsa plugin too, it does not work.
the alsa plugin says 'error opening alsa device: no such file or directory'. fine, you might say, use esound, oss or arts, but no. some apps do not deliver their sounds okay, kde does not play a sound when it starts up for example, some games and swf files are silent and a particularly annoying thing is that i cannot play audio CDs using any player at all. and i know the hardware is set up fine because mandrake (which uses alsa by default) plays cds fine (or it did when it was installed on this machine).

I have an onboard C-Media card w/ my ASUS motherboard.  I had to disable Plun-n-Play in BIOS and then used sndconfig in RH to configure the sound card.

Give that a try and let me know what happens.

when i try the sndconfig, it works fine, but oss still works, esound still works, arts still works, alsa still doesn't.

CDs still won't play and mp3s still will.

and yes, to the first guy, you need to install the mp3 plugin for xmms if you haven't done so, it does not come as part of red hat 8.

(i think its that)

slackware doesnt even have xmms, its the design of slackware i love. (if i wanted a distro with lots of apps id use Red-Hat 8.0.

Im considering a lfs however.

slackware 8.1 comes with xmms as one of its packages, what have you been smoking?

that's pretty off topic. maybe you'd do better if you stopped trying to turn every thread into a childish bsd vs linux war.

if this is your only argument for bsd then you have already lost this "war". every post you make, its "yeah, but check out these uptimes dood!!!". i havent used any bsd extensively, neither have i used linux all that much, but it seems that it should be a community instead of a battle. and this site is the microsoft eradication society, not the linux r0x0rz site. starting small wars between linux & bsd isnt helping...
