Lycoris
Mandrake
Red Hat
ANY linux can be installed beside windows.
but what you need to do is install windows then install Linux. Make sure you partition your hardrive to have appropriately sized FAT so that there will be room for linux.

you can dl almost every distro at www.linuxiso.org

Mandrake Linux can resize your partition to install the OS on the same partition as Windows.

Download it from:
http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/ftp.php3

You just burn the ISO's to CD, put disk 1 in the drive, and restart.

Here is Mandrakesoft's official user's guide:
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/doc/82/en/user.html/

A specific guide to resizing partitons:
http://www.linuxbeginner.org/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=60

It may be a little hard to follow, so here is an easier to follow (and print    ) install guide:

Have fun!

I've tried 5 different Linux distros, and so far my favorite is Red Hat. I can't say anything about Mandrake because I haven't bothered to play with it yet. Red Hat can install on a FAT partition. Ultimately, though, it would be best to get another HD and install your Linux on it. Make sure you install Windows first so you don't have to reinstall the Linux Loader (Windows automatically overwrites the MBR to make a PC automatically boot Windows every time it installs).

my favorite is red hat too. I am gonna try Lycoris today (hopefully). I cant really comment on the other ones i have tried (Debian, Slackware, FreeBSD, Mandrake, OpenBSD, Smoothwall) because i only used most of them for about a day or two.

I would, if they offered their ISO images for download, but since they don't, I won't.

Yeah, I know. But after having used it for a while, I would more than gladly pay the full $40. Plus, if the funding goes to create a more user friendly distro, that helps newbies get involved, why not? They can always move on to the free distros later.

And, for advanced users in general, they can FTP the  components they need, if they wanted to.

Yeah, yeah, pain in the ass, I know.  :D

I'm more than happy with RedHat, and because they allowed me to download their ISOs without hiding anything I have paid for boxed sets more than once... Maybe SuSe could learn something there...

you're right, but i don't usually read the windows section much, it tends to be full of 'i want this and i want it now!' type stuff. fucking ring Microsoft support, i say. example:

actually, this is quite a friendly one, saying thanks and intrinsically it's  a linux question, however the phrasing is quite common for the windows forums, you know: "i want" "don't say ... because i don't want ..." "i need windows games because i am unable to conceive of any decent games on a unix type system" et c et c, you get the idea. when you've read it once, you've read it a thousand times...
