« on: 16 January 2003, 07:56 »
Is there a full on Quicktime for Linux? or is there a way to get Quicktime to work with WINE?

mplayer plays Quicktime movies, although I think not the latest version.
There isn't any Quicktime player from Apple for Linux to my knowledge.

well i know there is no quicktime for linux because i went to apple.com earlier in the week and looked for one. upon verifying this i wrote them an email saying how genuinely puzzled i was that they had brought out a version for windows but not for linux, and pointing out that since their operating system is *NIX now and since they're dabbling in KDE and XWindows then really they should be able to bring out a quicktime for linux without too much effort. I also said how you could quite easily get realplayer for linux.

I would recommend sending an email to apple about this. remember every email they receive represents n hundred customers who thought the same thing but didn't email (that's if their marketing dept is any cop).

I'm off to www.apple.com right now!

Edit: Voila! Done.
Now everybody should do the same and send a mail to
[email protected]

Like Calum I mentioned the existence of Realplayer for Linux and I pointed them to the fact that MacOS and Linux both were Unix-based.

Sent one in saying how it's annoying to have to use MOL in YDL just to view a QT movie.  :D

how would i go about installing the windows version of quicktime on a linux system (red hat 8) with wine already installed on it? all i have done with wine before is run programs straight off a windows partition, but can i run the quicktime installer and put it in my linux filesystem? (in /opt i suppose...) can i can i? huh? huh? huh?

Apparently it works well with codeweavers wine, but in the presence of the legend that is mplayer why would you do it?

well not that i have made much effort but i haven't got mplayer to play quicktime videos yet, and i am unwilling to get a pay/binary only version of wine to be honest.

will try and read up on mplayer when i have a moment though..

Part of Apple's "Switch" strategy is aimed at Unix/Linux users. If they provided software like QT for Linux, people might be less inclined to switch.

Now why would Apple spend all that time and money developing an X11 version of QT just to help Linux users decide to NOT switch?

Quicktime for Windows should install and work via an updated version of Wine without any modifications to the config file.  Just be sure to run Quicktime in a desktop window, because, for some reason, Quicktime screws up the look of the desktop.  Another way to make sure it runs without messing up the desktop (I haven't tried this myself), is, in the DLL Overrides section of the config file, ddraw should be set to the following:

ddraw = ""

Other than that, Quicktime has always worked for me, and it actually runs even better through Crossover plugin from Codeweavers.

hmmm... Im not sure if this is the case. After all, they supported YDL when they were starting up. Apple gave them crittical info on their hardware etc. to facilitate linux development. They even authorized YDL to distribute YDL loaded Mac's.

Also, Apple is supporting several OSS, GNU/GPL, initiatives including X11 for Mac OSX... but then that does benifit them
