Unable to run linux?
« on: 10 June 2003, 11:11 »
Are there any distros that support new hardware? I've tried linux before(Mandrake) and found that I was REALLY comrpmising on hardware functionality. Examples:

-My logitech cordless keyboard has function buttons-unprogrammable in linux

-Several joysticks don't work

-Most of my internal stuff(mb, hard drive, videocard, soundcard, & CDRW drive) aren't comaptbiile at all.

-I'ved got a TV tuner card(AIW9700 pro) that I can't use at all

-I don't have sound(SBAugiy 2 platium-no audio rack funciotnality either)

-RAID drivers unavalibile

Is this one of those cases where MS is better to run than linux? You hear all of the stories about it running on old, outdate underpowered hardware, but what about new, extremely powerful stuff?

 As well, I do a lot of audio mixing and video editing. Would linux support that? Specifically, Flash and Cubasis-type stuff, and Finale for music composition.

unfortunate.
it is the case that newer stuff doesn't get immediate support. the reason for this is that companies release their drivers for windows only when they bring out a new piece of kit, in linux, the drivers tend to be written and maintained purely by users. If nobody who owns a particular piece of kit has submitted a driver to the kernel maintainers yet then there won't be any support for it.

still,
quote:
Most of my internal stuff(mb, hard drive, videocard, soundcard, & CDRW drive) aren't comaptbiile at all.
this does sound a bit odd to me, it really does, as does your RAID thing. i wonder if something more serious than just outdated drivers isn't going on here. As a matter of course i would say try red hat instead of mandrake but that's not really a solution, and mandrake shouldn't be having huge problems with hard drives etc.

as for "is it better to run MS than linux" probably not, and i will tell you why: usually if hardware is not supported, the number of people out there contributing to linux means that usually your kit will become supported pretty quickly. People used to microsoft 2-5 year schedules find this hard to believe, but often it can take maybe days, weeks or at the outside, months to support a particular piece of hardware, except where the manifacturer has deliberately crippled the product and emulated around the deficiencies in their (windows only) software.

At the risk of sounding inflammatory, there's not a lot anybody here can do for you unless you post actual details about your kit. it's all very well to say your motherboard doesn't work under linux, but unless you say what kind of motherboard, what kind of hard drive, what kind of joysticks etc, then it simply looks like you are bitching. If you were to say exactly what doesn't work then maybe somebody would give you a simple fix. who knows?

system Specs:

MB=MSI GNB-Max FISR
HD=sorry, the drives are, I just thought they weren't
Gamepad=Nostromo n50 USB
Videocard=AIW 9700 Pro
soundcard= SBAudigy 2 Platinum
Raid drivers are windows only=Promise FastTrak IDE & SATA RAID controller(onboard controllers)
Keyboard=Logitech cordless elite duo
Mice= cordless optical trackman, cordless mousesman optical.

None of these are listed on the hardware compatib. list. Most work, but there's no way to change the config. e.g.- the soundcard has an internal rack that is unusable because it requires MS drivers.

Are you sure you have used the right drivers?  Some of the distros can be pretty bad at autodetection.  :rolleyes: .  The sound blaster should work with the emu10k1 module,  I had to load that myself to get my soundblaster live working.  The internal stuff (hard drives / cdrom should definitely work.)  There were a few (more than one) threads already here re:sound work on linux.  As for the rest Google is your friend for compatability checking.

All of those things are compatible with Linux.

You may have to find and download the drivers. Maybe even compile a new kernel. But all of the things you have listed work within Linux, to my knowledge.

i don't know anything about it, but the sound card system may be a little different than usual if your card is supported by ALSA. This is a driver set for many popular soundcards which generally works better than the sound drivers in the kernel (or so i understand it). If your card is supported by ALSA, mandrake uses ALSA, other distros do not.

Now that's no help on its own but this info may be useful to anybody else who might be chiming in with their experiences or comments.

I haven't really tried mandrake 9.1 since i wasn't really happy with 9.0 but so far 9.1 has autodetected all my stuff fine, which is of course not the same as your stuff. Listen did you have all that stuff plugged in during the installation by the way? even if not, mandrake's "harddrake" (analogous to kudzu in red hat) should be ok at picking up things like keyboard and mouse etc.

I am confused about 2 things though. If your motherboard is not supported, then how do you know any of the other stuff is not working? i would imagine that if the motherboard doesn't work, you wouldn't be able to install mandrake at all. also, if your mouse and keyboard are not working, how would you know there was no way to change the config? for example, you should be able to change the configuration of your mouse and keyboard in the file /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 (yes it's still XFConfig-4 in mdk or so i believe) as well as certain settings for your video card and monitor, this config file can be edited in a virtual terminal (press ctrl-alt-f* where * is a number from 1 to 6 to get one, then press ctrl-alt-f7 to get back to the gui) using your keyboard, if it works at all.

I'm curious which version of Mandrake you've tried.  I'm thinking, from the problems you describe, you're trying an outdated version.  If the version you're trying is earlier than 8.2, try a newer version.

I think he was talking about the programmable keys on the keyboard (you know those annoying little soft things you use to open up IE or Outlook / change volume etcetera.)  I never use them personally, but If you do use them you may be able to get them to work with some techy stuff.  Unfortunately those "non standard" type keys are going to be difficult to get to work.  (Sorry.)  I do know that you can rig up the windows key to start up the BSOD screensaver though.   :D

And Calum is right - if your motherboard isnt detected by Linux you wouldnt be running.  Are you talking about some specific feature on the motherboard, like temperature detection?

How could you be running at all if your hard drives / video card werent working?  Surely it would have been impossiblew to boot / see things?  For the hard drives are you talking about filesystems maybe?

Yeah I guess until Logitech decides to support their keyboard under Unix systems you will either have to go for a technical solution or none at all.

well actually the "stupid extra keys" feature has been implemented in at least two open source projects. i haven't tried either of them, they are both on sourceforge, hang on... here we go http://lineak.sourceforge.net/ is the URL for the one i downloaded, i have a compaq easy access keyboard, but have never felt the need to use those extra 8 buttons along the top, so never installed this software. Incidentally the buttons don't work in windows either unless i install some crap software that came with the keyboard (which i did not do).

Anyway, notice how many people are trying to help address the problems in this thread? my prediction is that after another couple of posts this topic will fade into the past and the original poster won't respond. No offence to corkscrew intended whatsoever, and i hope i am wrong, but usually when people start off with a "linux simply doesn't work with my computer" topic and everybody pitches in trying to help, the person who started the topic often does not acknowledge the help and the topic is forgotten.

I think it is important however to realise that firstly many (or all) of these perceived problems may well have solutions, and secondly, people in the open source/ linux community almost fall over themselves to help. If somebody is determined to continue saying linux does not support their hardware though, there isn't much anybody can do to help them no matter what they try.

again, no personal offence intended in this case to corkscrew, it was simply an observation on the tendency of this type of topic in general.

Yeah we've all seen it before.  Still I would rather offer help just for the one that takes it rather than not help at all for the ten that don't and ignore the intelligent ones at the same time.  Although stuff like "linux doesn't work with my hard drive / motherboard" does make it difficult to take the poster seriously.

This is to help you with the Ati 9700 tv out problem. Try here http://www.stud.uni-hamburg.de/users/lennart/projects/atitvout/
as well as here.
http://gatos.sourceforge.net/

Next up is RAID. RAID is not new, and since it is used mostly on servers, linux has supported it for quite a while.

Your mb, hard drive, videocard, soundcard, & CDRW drive are compatible. Ive never had trouble with any of the hardware you listed. Since you obviously just inserted the linux disc and didnt actually try using it, I must say that you are quite ignorant in your knowledge of the subject, so this post is pretty much a waste.
