Mac or Linux?

I have a pc running (blush) windows XP and I've been doing a little research into other operating systems. I now know quite a bit about Unix, Linux and BSD. However, I saw the thread from the guy who wanted to be converted to using Mac but to my mind the explanations didn't cut it. How would you sell the Mac OS over a FREE OS?

Since you already own an x86 based computer, why not try Linux first, seeing as it costs nothing?  If you don't like it then you can consider Macintosh.

I have tried Knoppix and I think its great. I have also downloaded RedHat 8.0 and Mandrake 9.0 but have not yet decided whether to install one of them. I use shitty windows mainly for Dreamweaver and Photoshop. Also in passing I must point out that since I've had XP it has never crashed. I fully agree with all the comments posted here about how shit Microsoft is but the little bastards are making their OS's more stable.

I have Dreamweaver running in WINE...as for Photoshop, you'd have to ask someone else. But, most distrobutions come with the GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) that is pretty much equivalent to Photoshop.

You may want to install Mandrake 9 or Red Hat 8 by resizing your partitions. See this thread for more info:

IMO, Macs are great computers, but they are expensive, and if your familiar with Linux, thats probably the better route.  Its open source, and more powerful than Macs are.

Try Red-Hat 8.0 rather then Womandrake...
(An asian bloke laughed at me calling Mandrake Womandrake at the installfest)

And lets also try putting this in the Linux section, as it has ms much to do with Windows as Voidmain does.
