server help
« on: 4 October 2003, 00:27 »
I am using red hat linux 9.0 and i am at school using it. In my classroom i have to use it as a server and i am not sure how to do it. If someone can please help it would be very appreciative. I also want to know if you can connect to the server while in windows so you can transfer files to it. The server will be the only linux system in the entire school and i need to know how to do it.

does your school give your computer a public ip address or do you all get private ones that connect to the internet via a gateway or proxy server? Does your school put you behind a firewall? What you are asking here you should be asking the technitions at your school because the answers we wont know. As far as configuring linux to be a server, lots of us would be happy to help. You failed to specify what kind of server and what you want it to be doing though... other than file sharing, which is easy via ftp.

We are using a private form of IP like 192.168.1.114. (that is mine at school). We are also using a proxy server and are under a firewall. Well the type of server that i want to run is server that can store files on it that windows can connect threw. I think it is called a remote access server but i am not sure.

i think you can safely say any server has remote access... that's what makes it a server right? You're probably thinking of a samba server or a ftp server, either one is possible but you will not be able to access the files from home. You need to decide wether you want an FTP server or an SMB server... or some other form that hasn't crossed my mind that windows can use natively.
