Mandrake Linux 9.0 on my Laptop?

G'day guys,

Hey don't pick on me, but I do have a couple of programs namely a favorite of mine Lotus organizer; my substitute brain, and John Walker's HomePlanet
(http://www.fourmilab.ch/homeplanet/homeplanet.html), which unless I can come up with their equivalents I am reluctant to rid myself altogether of the plague on my machine (m$).

Anyhow, I see so much conflicting information that my poor brain just crashes... not unlike my Window$ 2000 (spit on the ground). Anyway, if anyone can help me with the 'if and hows' I would be very appreciative.

PS It's a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4200 with a mobile Intel Celeron II, 500 and 192 MB of SDRAM at present it's only got a 6 gig hardrive but I'm about to get a 20.

PPS I also have a 'New Media'Bus Toaster 'high performance SCSI II ADAPTER for which apparently there are no drivers for Win 2000; so what else is new, which I used to use for my scanner and it would be nice if I could use that again!

what fuckups?

if i were you i would have a dual boot between windows 2000 (on a fat32 partition) and mandrake, remembering to have a separate partition for /home and about a 240MB swap partition.

Now this doesn't address your concerns that directly but what it means is that you can still use those two programs but you can get used to linux. now the thing about linux is that you'll install it (and remember to install as much as you can, basically everything except the servers, paying special attention to try and install all the libraries and development tools if you plan to install more stuff later on) and then you'll find that you have hundreds of new programs to try out.
I have no doubt at all that you will definitely be able to find a replacement for lotus organiser fairly fast, but i am not familiar with that sort of software so i can't really recommend stuff, and anyway it's best if you figure out which one is your favourite yourself. As for that planet one, i really don't know. I bet there is something out there similar but i certainly haven't heard of it.

That's why i say have a dual boot for now and you can still go into windows to run those two programs. You might even avoid the tedious reboot into windows if you install wine and get it to work properly, as it can run some windows programs in linux for you.

You made the statement of "hundreds of new programs"? All this for what amounts to a pittance to buy the "shrink-wrapped version of the operating system." ('MandrakeSoft Declares Bankruptcy' - post) !!!


Why are so many people so mindless, Mandrake needs support... If you want to succeed in wiping Microsoft of the planet it's senseless not to make a relatively minor contribution to it's demise... or at least it's severe hemorrhaging. If people actually get involved in supporting companies like Mandrake we may have a viable product which will appeal to the masses and with a bit of luck and our input and suport may not be controlled by the "bean counters".


Secondly Re; My faverout HomePlanet program... It really is an exelent Astronomy program that a professional Astromemer friend of mine recomended to me, the site has a lot more than just astronomy, though the Sky screen saver is also exelent since it is active... It's neat knowing what is actually up in the Sky above!

OK off my soap box and back to one of my problems... The Mandrake thingie...

I sent a e-mail to the Mandrake people and got this back:-

"I can't say for certain, but I think it will work with the following exceptions:

I believe you have a Lucent win modem in that model. To use it you would have to manually install a Lucent driver. (How do I find out if it is a Lucent win modem and where do I get the Linux/Lucent drivers?)

I believe you have a Savage S3 video card. X version 4.2.x has a driver that should work ok but Savage S3 can be finicky. (I'm already having problems with this I believe. After installing the latest drivers from Toshiba my sound; both in my DVD player and my Winamp player, is giving out a 'stammer' every 4 or so second which is really pissing me off. Anyway, anyone have any idears on how to fix this problem; both in Mandrake and Win 2000?)

Usually laptop power management features are not as well supported in Linux but there is a package for toshiba called "tosh-utils" that may help." (Anyone have any views on this issue?)
