Damn, keeping up with you is like trying to keep up with a rooster in a hen house. I'm not trying to be mean but I would take a couple of deep breaths, try and limit posting to one thread that deals with the same subject. Find the "edit" button to add to a message rather than posting multiple messages in a row, etc.

Again, not trying to be mean, it's just BBS ethics. Also, if at all possible, try and find your answers on Google first before asking here. It may take you a little longer the first couple of times but believe me, you'll be better off in the long run.  Thanks for your consideration.

I agree with void main. Pls calm down a bit and try to edit your posts (no offense)    . This might after all be your modem in the Mandrake HDB and since you're getting a dial tone then it should work. Try also kppp in KDE to set it up. As I told you I have no clue about AOL so I can't help with that, sorry...

http://web.archive.org/web/20011024063132/http://www.robnet.f2s.com/linux/aol.htm

Ever used AOL 2.5 or AOL 3.0? Now's your chance. Heh.

A better idea would be ditching AOL and signing up with a cheap, local ISP. They're usually faster then AOL, and they have a _competent_ tech department. The one I used to use "unofficially" supported Linux (meaning some of the techs would help me, even if they weren't supposed to). These guys, http://mylinuxisp.com/, are mainly Linux. But I dount you live in their area (but you might have Linux-supporting ISPs in your area, it's worth checking out).

Hey.., im sure it works..  BUT um...

well : I went under Macc and configured my modem, when it asks for what I want the phone and User ID and pass and DOMAIN I PUT

1-760-blahblah ( this is an AOL access number )

then for user and pass, I put my aol account and password..
for domain i jsut put AOL

i clicked connect, IT ACTUALLY DIALED! Im like HELL YES!!!

i looked at my external modem after it had started dialing.

the little red dots on the front ( which indicate its connected )  all lit up!!!

then, to my dismay, even tho my modem WAS CONNECTED TO SOMETHING! i looked at the little status tab and it said : FAILED TO CONNECT .. or something

do you think that putting an aOl access number and aol account / pass and AOL for domain will work? or something like that? I just want to get on the internet wif linux is all.....

was i correct in putting AOL for domain?? I doubt it...

You will not be able to connect to AOL using ppp only. They use a proprietary authentication protocol and it requires the proprietary AOL client. If you get with a local ISP you should have NO trouble.

I think AOL uses their own standard called "Oscar" and Linux doesn't support it (neither to does Windows - only the AOL client does).

Edit: Didn't see Void Main's reply. He basiclly said the same thing =\

Erm, if you got a new ISP, Linux _and_ Windows would be able to connect to the internet on the same account...

And yes, Peng should work. But the only way to find out is actually try. Download this on your windows partion and then mount it (because you don't have internte connection in Linux right now).

Apache is webserver software, more at www.apache.org.

You pay AOL every month right now. Stop paying them and pay a good local ISP instead. You will probably find it much cheaper.

I have been on the internet for 7 years, BBS's for 5 years before that and I have never used AOL under windows or linux. You can use Internet Explorer or better yet Netscape, Mozilla or Opera as your winodws browser instead of AOL's default browser.

You can get access for as little as about $10 a month. Search google. You can find nation/world wide ISP's such as netzero which offer local access numbers. Or you can look in your local phone book and call all the ISP's (Internet Service Providers). Do some price checking and show your parents how you can save them money by using something other than AOL.

Where I live I can only connect at 28,800 due to ancient phone lines. I have a friend who lives in an area with up to date phone lines and he uses AOL. You can see that his speed is actually slower than mine and he connects at around 46,000. That is mostly because of the mass usage of AOL. People who don't know any better use it (at least until they wise up).

I actually tried out NetZero when they first started up (and were free) but at that time they required a Windows client so you could be pushed all the advertisements. If you pay them the 10 bucks a month do they require the Windows client or will they allow a standard Linux compatible PPP connection?

I know someone who uses netzero and he uses both linux and windows. (He is my wife cousin and I turned him on to linux.) He may have a specific setup I don't know but the last I heard he was still using netzero. That was about 6 months ago though so you may want to check and make sure before you decide on them.
