Have I discovered the secret of Linux gaming?
« on: 25 September 2002, 02:36 »
So I've been pondering gaming under Linux. Im starting to wonder if Linux is not a perfect Wind0ze alternative because it's just awakening. Nowadays the Mac is a common gaming alternative, was it like that 8 years ago?

Now a "serious" system should not be based on games, but when you think about it, everything that makes a great buisness OS should also be good when being retrofitted to gaming purposes. Gaming and productivity tend to go hand in hand for most non-buisness people. Allowing an uber powerful buisness OS to be equally great for gamers is crucial. This means that the medium or heavy gamers stay with the same great buisness system, and are not swayed over to a darkside due to dickwads like MS filling a "gaming" void in the market. Because this home user is the majority of computer users, keeping them safe keeps the computing world safe from Microsoft or Microsoft wannabes.

So gamers(or home users) are the guardians of the future in general, and Linux(or any other *nixs) when it fills the void left by Microsoft's eventual death  ;)

The thing is, Linux is just as "capable" as any other OS for gaming. Look at Quake and Unreal Tournament for example. Now to get the game companies to port is the key. I believe it will happen one day. Question is when. You can help speed that up by sending email to your favorite game vendors...
Someone please remove this account. Thanks...

Games are a key area of the computing world. Linus Torvalds blames Sir Clives' failure to really allow  games on the QL for the demise of Sinclair computers.

Games often push technological limits for speed and processing, and business versions of the hardware are usually devised from that type of research.

You are absolutley correct in your statement that gamers should be looked after. I don't play many, but I still like a kill everything in site for stress relief, or a good game of chess when life is just a little too hard. It's a huge market. Do your part and buy Linux games, and encourage those who write them to produce more, or learn the trade and do it yourself. A change in career for you.
