linux is causing me headaches :(

Hi all. I wiped out windows in my laptop and installed redhat linux. It seems to be working ok, but I can't get the correct resolution; it's all blurry! I get a headache after minutes of working with it!

Some guys have suggested to check the file /etc/X11/XF86Config, but I don't understand anything, can anyone provide a bit more explanation on how to set it up. Documentation is also helpful.

Here's some snippet of my config file (My laptop is toshiba te2100, with KDE installed:

files
modules
InputDevice
Monitor
Device
Screen

what parameters do I need to change?
Do I need to restart the PC to get the changes? or just closing my session will do it?

Does it work with a lower or higher resolution?

PS: Press Ctrl-Alt-F3 to leave X11.
Log in as root and type, init 3 to close X.
Now run the nvidia installer...

I pressed ctrl-alt-f3 and it took me to the command line. I don't know what you meant by doing that, sorry, I'm very new to this.

I also read somewhere that you can try CTRL-ALT- + or CTRL-ALT- -

but these two commands screw up everything.

I was able to access the command line ok, if that's what you were wondering.

I'll be downloading the driver, will let you know how it goes.

You have to close X11 to install the driver...

After its installation you will have to edit your config file. The installer will tell you where to find the documentation.

I've been browsing the link you gave me but I can't find the file I need (red hat 9, toshiba te2100, pentium 4, 1.8 ghz)

I was tempted to download this file:

NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run

but it says:
Operating System: Linux IA32

I don't know what IA32 stands for.

I downloaded before the one that said athlon but it didn't work, of course, coz mine is not athlon.

thanks. I downloaded that and installed it. It executed without any problems.

When I rebooted the maching it appeared the NVIDIA logo, but my screen looks worst, even more blurry and huge. Some of the icons in my desktop are collapsed, one of top of the other.

This is depressing guys. What else do I need to do? I followed the instructions in the nvidia README file.

I tried with resolution 1024x768, with color depth:

millions of colors
256
and thousands of colors

with no luck at all.

I also looked in my nvidia log file, and found these interesting things (WW stands for "warning"):

any suggestions? what else can I do?

Also, if you look in my first post, the section "monitor" of my XF86Config file has a flat monitor configured (dell1800 fp). I was using two monitors when I had windows installed (the laptop and this dell), but now I'm only using the laptop (since I find it too hard to configure both). COuld that be the problem?

Hmm.  Blurry and huge...what's the native resolution of your LCD?  If you use a lower one it gets blurry.

Other than that I'm not sure, you'll have to wait for someone better at this than me.

I _think_ it's working...

a friend of mine happen to have the same laptop, so I asked him to send me the config file.

Now even the scroll ball in my mouse works!
