how you can help fight Microsoft
« on: 17 August 2002, 21:25 »
you people seem to think that by switching yourselves, you are somehow denting Microsoft when in fact you are doing absolutely nothing. trying to beat microsoft is not about taking away their numbers, it is about taking away a reason for even wanting microsoft. ask yourself this question, WHY should you switch to Linux and don't say because MS sucks. are there games? somewhat. are there file sharing programs? yes but they are console based and hard to use. is burning CDs easy to do? if somebody has explained how, otherwise, no.

if you want to fight back against microsoft, you have to take a stand and PROGRAM for Linux. if Linux had support for things like Kazaa and was actually able to play video files (mpg, mov and a few others), we would have a LOT more people on Linux than we do now.

think of some of your most used programs in Windows such ICQ, AIM, Kazaa, Nero Burning Rom and programs like that. if you use these programs on a regular basis then you can't really switch over to Linux now can you. yes i am aware that there is a Linux distro for ICQ and Kazaa but LICQ does not save contacts on the ICQ database. when i setup LICQ for Linux, it didn't have any people in the list but when i did it for Windows it put all 23 contacts in my list (this was AFTER i formatted and reinstalled Windows btw). i haven't gotten around to trying Kazaa for Linux yet.

unless we, the linux users, can give people good reasons to switch to Linux, there will be no hope in changing people oever. please help out Linux by helping develop software for Linux

You may find this hard to believe but I have no need for any of those programs. I say if that's where you get your kicks then you should stick to Windows. I don't use Linux because I want to dent M$.  In fact I really couldn't care less what happens to M$ as long as they don't mess with my computing way of life (which they are starting to do with trying to take over the Internet with all their proprietary crap and why I am so anti-M$). You may also find it hard to believe that for what I use computers for Linux is FAR superior to any M$ operating system.

And I find CD burning to be extremely easy in Linux, much more so than in Windows.  Maybe the software for Windows has gotten better but from my experiences you better not try to do much of anything else in Windows while burning a CD or you have a good chance of making a coaster.  This never happens in Linux.

I burn CDs all the time and go about my business as if I am not burning a CD and you would never know a burn is going on.  Even on my P100 which is where I burn most of my CDs it never produces a coaster when I do other things.  Try loading Windows on a P100 and burning CDs and do something else other than running notepad without producing a coaster or rebooting between burns.

But that's just me, one of the 6%.
Someone please remove this account. Thanks...

kazaa is full of spyware why the hell would you want to use it. Most of the windows users i know use Limewire which has a good linux version too. There is hundreds of instant messengers for linux that will run any protocol. I have made a stack about 1 1/2 inch high of coasters in windows, i have made no coasters in linux... same computer i could browse the interent and do other things iin linux while burning, but not in windows. And nero burning rom is a confusing heap of shit.

(i was only there to laugh at people then help them by sending them here and to www.linuxiso.org, then they banned me, but then i went on again using an anonymous proxy... they'll never stop me!!!)

you can actually burn CDs easily? the one program i have that came with Mandrake and i haven't found another burning program yet...i don't care that much either though. i say Kazaa because Kazaa is the best one in terms of getting files. Kazaa filters out fake files wheras Limewire does NOT. on Limewire, every search turns up at least 30 fake files, usualy named something like "briney spears porno naked pokemon anime hentai panties" and it's just a file with no function or anything.

edit:
yeah i was at windowsbbs, they deleted my post because i asked "why does windows have that error report if it does absolutely nothing and all it does is stop programs from starting themselves again?"

I was subtle, but then i got bored and threatened them.
But they can only ban your IP so you can just keep coming back using anonymous proxies

File sharing programs??? LOL!!!!  When Bill tightens the Palladium noose, you can kiss your P2P programs goodbye.  Especially when all of the software, with the proprietary Window$ code, will be written on the .NET platform (read the "backwards-compatibility" article.)

Micro$hit is letting you get a taste.  A TASTE. Then they are going to pull the plug.  No more free porn, no more MP3s, no more JPEGs, and no more "right-clicking." Develop Linux Programs, you say? I ran Kazaa on Linux fine, right up until XP came out, and then I could no longer connect.  LimeWire suited me fine.

Burning CDs?  XCDRoast suits you just fine, if you know how to configure it.  You have the source code, just search a few sites and re-compile. If you bought a Linux distro, and you fuck something up, the original version is on the CD.....it isn't that bad.

And for your "develop Linux programs" slur:  People are developing.  They are trying harder and harder...and not for prestige, or honor.  It is from the goodness of the heart that pumps that blood that fuels the fire between those synapsi. And, many of those people worked for M$. They just did a Cntrl+Alt+F2, because they cared.  I find it amusing that people that develop under Linux/UNIX actually care.  They obviously don't under M$.....if they did, why the buggy releases?

I say a HUGE step is to capture the gaming audience by improving the windows emulators. My theory is that Wine and WineX can run many windoze games very well, but you have to configure them right. What about making a REALLY high power newbie friendly configurer? Im pretty sure winesetup is not a high power WINE configurer.

You will never get me to totally abandon wind0ze in a million years.... until the majority of my current and future games run fine on Linux.  :D

PS:If Palladium really takes off, don't expect me to jump on that boat. Im desperate for my game drugz, but im not willing to follow the pack to pallidum to get them.
