FINALLY FUCKING MADE IT!!!
« on: 28 September 2002, 14:21 »
After one and a half years, i am finally, for the first time, posting to this board using linux! i am typing this in konqueror!!!

amazing.

Not sure if this is permanent though, i am using a borrowed Xircom Network Card. Not sure if i will get to keep it.

I can see i have work to do though, the fonts are rubbish. Any good pointers for how to sort that out?

Also, when i set up this system i didn expect to ever connect so now i need people advice about what to install for security sake and how to make sure it starts up automatically when it needs to. Again, any thoughts? it will all be there on my mandrake CD, just want to know what things to install.

Pretty good pretty neat.

Seeya all on the forums!

Oh, what internet connection/modem did you have before?

While we're at it, let's plug my cause. Ok I've come up with a revelation! In wind0ze I cannot get my ASDL working out of the box, I need to install something first. Basically im thinking that it's not so much that im installing drivers as it is im installing the ability for Wind0ze to recgonize an internal ADSL modem.

So what if I just need to get a non-ethernet ADSL DHCP(I believe that's what my modem uses) add-on for Linux? The thought came to me when I realized that Linux never had a non-ethernet option for ADSL in the install program.(I've seen three differnt installs so far)

gracious! ie unleashed a wave of internet/linux frustration!

sorry, i have no more answers, just another question. kppp does not work in XFce, it returns a 16 error, can anybody link to a page that details the command line procedure for setting up a ppp dialup connection?

Calum, this probably isn't for your isp, but it might help. Has the locations of config files for dial-up. Lazygamer, what kind on internal ADSL NIC do you have, and is that software SpeedStream stuff?

One clickness?  What the heck is that? Do you mean you would rather double-click to start apps from their desktop ICONS and from within konq etc?  If so, just change the setting in Control Center to require double click. Also, I don't believe konqueror's fonts are bad at all since moving to KDE 3.x. They are much better than they were in 2.x for sure. And if you play with true type fonts and anti-aliasing you can probably get the fonts you desire...

Yes KDE 3.0 is much better than that shitty gnome that fucked up my fonts. Somehow GNOME set itself to show fonts as white on white. Thats when i uninstalled gnome and just used KDE.

You can also try Fluxbox. If you're used to Windows bar at the bottom or anywhere else in the screen, you might not like it. Easy to install and can be customized (as much as you want? not sure). Anyway, it's still a beta, but working very well.

did you say you have no idea about what to configure for security?

take a quick visit to  http://www.linuxguruz.org/iptables/ .  and read the man page for iptables.  There are lots of scripts posted on the site for configuring iptables; and for getting it going when you boot is a matter of adding the script to the boot scripts in /etc/init.d/rc.<number> -- not sure for mandrake.  I use slackware, which has a different startup structure.   Also, to be a little more safe, make sure "kernel autoloading" is turned off in the kernel (may require recompiling), this will keep the linux kernel from automaticaly loading a kernel module when it detects that it will need it.  This also means you might have to play around with modprobe a bit to load all the necessary drivers for your computer, and add that (as another script) in the startup directory.  Again, this is personal preference, but I don't like the idea of the kernel interfacing with my network card before I get a chance to put up the firewall. As an alternate to a butt tonne of typing, you can download fwbuilder and use a gui (KDE i think in this case) for configuring iptables.  I haven't used it because my firewall setup is extensive, and it doesn't detect rules already in place.  dunno why.  anyway.  The script I borrowed most heavily from is at  www.cs.princeton.edu/~jns/security/iptables .
It is well commented and very good for a quick and dirty tour of iptables.  With very little tweaking it should run on your pute.

if you want more help, and even if the forums would be receptive, i could post my scripts here.  It is quite extensive however, spanning several files (since i am trying to make it easier to configure on the fly).

Also, there is an extreemly extensive firewall script project known as "rc.firewall", but recently renamed "rcf".
http://rcf.mvlan.net:8080/ , however, this will almost definately require a kernel recompile if you are using kernel 2.4.x as it is written for the 2.2 kernel "ipchains".  You can recompile the 2.4 kernel with support for ipchains or iptables, but not both.  (you can even compile for ipfwadm -- kernel 2.0....)

but for the really quick, you can drop this line at a shell prompt:
Code: [Select]
this will prevent new connections to your box (telnet, ssh, ftp, etc).

the real question is: how much do you want to learn along the way?

I think this may help. Here is part of a firewall for iptables i made:
Code: [Select]
I dont use that^ anymore though.... now i use ipchains.

Ok let's see if I can give half-decent info today.

I have a Daewoo DW-8000P modem. It actually says "Daewoo DW-8000P PCI NIC ADSL DRIVER" under XP's network connection section. I have no fucking idea what a NIC is or how all this ADSL stuff works.

Speedstream software? Nope, just have this little ADSL status monitor that loads on startup...

NIC - Network Interface Card.

Unless Daewoo/Daytek release Linux drivers, which they appear not to have at this moment, and I wouldn't hold my breath, you will likely never get the DW-8000P to work with Linux. What you *needed* was the DW-8000E or DW-8000EX (External ADSL modems) along with a supported Ethernet card in your machine to connect the two together.

I would call my provider (assuming you got the modem from your ADSL provider) and ask them what your options are. Ask if they offer the external modem (or what other external ADSL modems they recommend), and if you can trade in your internal on an external so you can run Linux. You have to make sure whatever ADSL modem you get it is compatible with your provider's system.

Now this may be cost prohibitive for you, hopefully not. External ADSL modems are nice because you can plug a Cable/DSL router/switch between the external ADSL modem and your computers and all of your computers can access the Internet. If you only have one PC then plug a patch cable (or crossover cable) directly between the External ADSL modem and your Ethernet card in your computer.

Here are links to both the external and your internal (software ADSL modem) DW-8000 models:

You can try to use firestarter to set up an initial firewall.  It's wizard based and easy
to use.
