if you install windows after linux (or whatever os), windows overwrites the MBR w/ntldr. You are going to have to repair the MBR.

quote:
Perhaps an easier way is to install Windows normally (without creating a new /boot partition, etc.). After that, boot using the installation cds for Linux (if you have them) and choose rescue mode (this option is presented when first booting from cd). Rescue mode allows you to rerun the LILO configuration and modify the MBR after being hijacked by Windows. Alternative to that - but still similar - you can boot from your boot floppy in to Linux after the install of Windows. From within Linux you can, again, rerun the LILO configuration.

i am assuming that this would work for grub as well. I really dont know  :(

you just need to make a linux boot disk, then after installing windows use the boot disk to boot into linux then do "grub-install /dev/hda"

Don't forget to edit the grub.conf file in /boot/grub so that you can boot windows, if you need it that badly.  Be sure to preserver the white space:

title Windoze98
     rootnoverify(hd0,0)
      //(hd0,0) is /dev/hda1  change as needed
     chainloader +1

That should work.

<-boot ~80 meg-><--root partition---~17gig-><-swap-1gig><free space ~2gig>

i want at the end of the drive about 5 gigs FAT32 for the winders thing.

Remove the swap partion, resize root partion using "ext2resize" to 14GB, recreate the swap partion, use left-over space for your windows partion. I'll write something more detailed tomorrow--right now, I just have enough energy to type this last sentence.

Doogee I wouldn't recommend installing windows (no capital) after Linux if its 2000 or Xp.  The aforementioned will, in my experience (well, I've only tried it with Xp but I've read its the same with 2000) f*ck around with your Linux partition, more so if its ext3.  Not just the bootloader, it will corrupt the partition and it is very hard to recover the partition and its data.  If its 9x/me fire ahead with your installation, it'll just overwrite the boot sector to load windows only; so make a bootdisk and install LILO/Grub.

Either way be very careful about partitioning.  Do not under any circumstance use DOS FDISK, parted or GNU's fdisk is probably the best option.

BTW, I know what its like, you do or will need that windows installation for something.  For me I need it for those devices inaccessible in Linux because of the manufacturers won't release drivers (on my system, that's just a scanner)... so I won't nag you about installing windows.
