Total LINUX newbie

I want to get Linux on my computer. I'm going to partition the drive and keep Windows ME because it's more compatible with games. One of my college subjects is Linux so in a few months I should be hopefully be something of an "expert"

So, which is the best version, preferably free, version for a total beginner to get???

Obviously reasons would also be appreciated

This question has been beat to death. Look through some of the other Linux/UNIX threads.  General concensus is either RedHat, Mandrake, SuSe for new and intermediate users (not in any particular order), Debian and others for more advanced users.

Mandrake Linux it is quite user friendly and makes it easy to get started.

I have heard the same about SUSE but it costs.

Redhat is a bit more difficult to use but that is probably what you will end up with in your class.

I think it's Redhat we're using, can't be sure though. I'll be trying to convince my anti-microsoft teachers to let me burn a copy of the CD, else I need a free version

Hmmm... I got a PPC with a small partition. Im d-loading yellowdog linux as I hear it's one of the best, easy to get into, Mac-friendly distro's. Yet alot of you guys seem to swear by Mandrake, there is a PPC version for that too.

What do you guys know about YDL?
