Linux is great for windows games!
« on: 12 November 2002, 13:39 »
I Don't know if everyone knows this, but Wine runs Quake 3 faster then windows 98SE does (with the latest drivers and fresh install)

windows: 70-90FPS
slackware 8: 100-110

basicly any quake 3 based game is gonna run faster in linux, and I think openGL looks better too.

Sad on window's part? I think so.

Gimmie a "Shit YEAH!" if you think Linux is ready for gaming.

FYI: I am new to the fourms, this is my first post. HI EVERYONE!

Ready for gaming? Hell yeah
Ready for Win gaming? HELL NO.

Win games usually use directx. Directx needs to be *emulated*. This is imperfect (can cause crashes, may not work at all sometimes - well, often) and slow as hell.

OpenGL and usual window API's can be 'translated' so they run faster than directx. Faster than windows itself is odd, but possible (and a clear example that linux is superior on this).

But even that can fail sometimes. Running Win games on Linux is generally a bad thing and shouldn't be done unless no alternative is available (which is - sadly - usually the case in games).

Native Linux games work great - see Quake 3. Sadly there aren't many.

The only possible complain i have about linux..
that it cant run Windows games...

However, we could change this to "Games arent being made for Linux.."
this is what i want, more Linux games.
just so i can kill off my boredom at those moments of IRC lulling.

*sigh*

I agree that WINE should be used as a last resort however I have hade some success running Half-Life and its Mod's. They even work for online gaming which I was really happy about.

Tip for win98 (l)users: type copy /con/con in your command prompt to increase stability
